I wouldn't say "old school" as much as "successful"...

Successful coaches don't divide the time they spend teaching a defense drastically different from their base defense. Coach K didn't Roy Williams didn't Jay Wright didn't Jim Boeheim didn't Mark Few doesn't Tony Bennett doesn't Etc etc etc It is not worth the time spent in practice to have it all negated with a 2 second change in play call from your opponent to attack a zone that is a token zone at best

HokieHeartNSoul 12/14/23 08:00 AM ET
You mean Rechsteiner?**
Pylons 12/14/23 09:57 AM ET
Nope. Have info from a long-time successful HS coach who says
HokieHeartNSoul 12/14/23 12:50 PM ET
Nickel splitting time at PG would be completely out of the blue.
Pylons 12/14/23 12:56 PM ET
That coach is now retired. Lifelong Hokie BB.
HokieHeartNSoul 12/14/23 02:52 PM ET
Kidd, Poteat, Beran, Nickel, Long and play a 3-2 zone
soflahokie 12/13/23 10:51 AM ET
Neither ever happens unless CMY is down to 5 players available!!!**
ancient alien 2018 12/13/23 05:26 PM ET
U could prob count on one hand the # of times CMY has used zone in career

Point taken GC , though Boehein is a bad example ...
hokeeron1 12/13/23 02:23 PM ET
That's precisely the point...
GCHokie34 12/13/23 02:53 PM ET
Yeah...my bad. I realized I had misconstrued your intention...
hokeeron1 12/15/23 10:41 PM ET
Maybe we could tinker with something like that vs American
Zanderhokie 12/13/23 09:10 AM ET
For at least 1 game
RiverVT 12/13/23 08:49 AM ET
Yeah, those are the main things to improve on now.
NC Hoke 12/13/23 12:04 PM ET
Any gains made offensively would be immediately lost defensively **
GCHokie34 12/12/23 11:24 PM ET
Why not add Big Pat also, let all 3 go at it. Can't coach height.**

first name Warren I think; Martin I think
VTCALS72 12/13/23 05:17 PM ET
When was that?**
Chris ColemanAdmin 12/13/23 02:12 PM ET
Warren Martin first year at UNC was 81

A lot more football talent than basketball

I mean, 3 of those went on to play D1 basketball...
GCHokie34 12/13/23 02:53 PM ET
Good on the kids getting a chance to play ball.

Bet it was hard to box out those guys!!**
tallahasseehokie 12/13/23 12:38 PM ET
Warren Martin was the big guy and he actually was a serviceable player
millmtnhokie 12/13/23 07:19 AM ET
I think Big Pat can be a factor for Tech by his redshirt junior and senior
LXNTN_HOKIE 12/13/23 01:24 AM ET
Last game in his 2 minutes I thought he blew out a knee 3 times
soflahokie 12/13/23 10:52 AM ET
In 2 minutes?
tallahasseehokie 12/13/23 07:31 PM ET
Wonder if he could play the Poteat role?
VT ChemE 1986 12/13/23 11:40 AM ET
That won’t happen. He’s not there.
NC Hoke 12/13/23 12:12 PM ET
I was, of course, referring to the future when Poteat has moved on**
VT ChemE 1986 12/13/23 01:12 PM ET
Oh, he has no future at VT
tallahasseehokie 12/13/23 07:33 PM ET
His foot-speed will not enable him to be an effective D-1 big, IMO. Hate it**
George Baylor 12/13/23 09:08 AM ET
Cannot do that without one being at least a minor threat from 3
hokiepro 12/12/23 08:45 PM ET
Poteat is NOT a 4 in any way, shape, or form. He's a spot 5 and does well
ancient alien 2018 12/12/23 08:42 PM ET
I can't remember the last time VT had a backup 5 as good as Poteat.**
YBYSAIAHokie 12/12/23 09:49 PM ET
Kidd put up similar numbers last year
Pylons 12/13/23 11:44 AM ET
Well, Buzz only allowed his team to have one guy over 6-5**
