Bennett is getting much much much more athletic than he ever has in player profiles. Gone are the days of Mike Tobey, Perrantes, and even Brogdon and Harris to a degree. He’s always had an athletic defensive stopper at the 4 (Mitchell, Atkins, etc) but Justin Anderson was the exception at the guard. VT is still in that era of high skill low athleticism player profile. If you look at uva now, there are a lot more Ryan dunns than Kody Stattmans (for those who need a refresher, it’s John Camden but slower). Bennett is going after Uber athleticism and letting skill catch up. Elijah Gertrude and Leon Bond are the two other examples, guys that their best skill is being twitchy athletes and letting their skill catch up in time. Even Beekman broke the mold where he was a meh shooter at best and has only really turned into a decent shooter. The system will stay, but Bennett is allowing athleticism to allow guys to find the floor and not leave. Uva is top 15 in block and steal rate showing an evolution in the new age to a very old system. It’s possible but just have to have the right pieces. And Gc has mentioned it too, Tech hasn’t lost anyone for the worst reason (getting a bigger bag) which is true for UVA. Our most impactful transfers (Rice/Radford and Shedrick) were due to player/coach relationships and fit, more so than NIL. And lastly, uva was hurt not because of NIL but because Bennett missed on virtually every recruit other than Beekman after the NC. For uva and Tech to compete, there can’t be recruiting misses.
