Your last sentence exactly sums it up for me.
After being a VT hoops fan since the late 1970's, I am at the point where I can feel myself just not caring any more. Not just because of the letdown after what was supposed to be a promising season. Not just because we have a caretaker, apathetic athletic director with one foot out the door. Not just because we have a coach who has clearly hit his ceiling here and also has one foot out the door (toward retirement).
It's because after decades of hoping that VT would actually care about hoops and FINALLY take some aggressive steps to move the program forward, I have given up hope that will ever happen in my lifetime. Whether it's something ingrained in the school culture, the athletic dept culture, or the fanbase/alum culture, it seems clear that there has not been and perhaps never will be a sense of urgency around the men's basketball program like what we have seen with football this offseason. I don't expect basketball to ever come close to football funding levels, and don't think it needs to be. But it is really depressing to see how the decades-long apathy around basketball has continued to adversely impact the program over multiple athletic directors and multiple coaches.
I will always pay attention to and cheer for VT hoops, because I'm an alum and I love the sport. Otherwise I wouldn't take the time to post on this board. But until I see some sign that VT administrators, coaches, and players are truly driven to win, and have some kind of vision to lift the program out of this perpetual spin cycle of mediocrity, I just can't see a reason to invest any real passion as a fan. It's not that the current vision is flawed. The problem is that there is no vision at all.
