Thoughts on TSL Neo Analysis

I thought Chris and David did a good job of analyzing/discussing what's going on with Neo, reaction to the booing, and general fanbase attitude towards VT players that go through slumps. Honestly, Chris your take that VT has bad/uneducated basketball fans is spot on. CBB is so much different than football, and it shows how football centric we've been when I read Hokie twitter takes during basketball season. However, I'd like to push back a little bit on TSL's analysis of the Neo situation. What I can agree on: Neo is a very good basketball player that is going through a shooting slump. Full stop. I want him to keep taking open looks. But, what has been most frustrating to me over the last 6 weeks is the poor decision making and sloppy play. These range from ill advised shot attempts in late game situations (see uva, stanford), missed late-game FTs, and TO's (wake, stanford, smu). Sometimes it feels that he comes down the floor with one thought in mind "to get his" and we end up playing a version of iso ball. David has even pointed this out on the pod. During a shooting slump of this caliber, that is clearly not going to be a net-benefit. Run CMY's system and let offense come to you. Neo appears to be an emotional player, and it's clear that the last month has taken a toll. Look no further than the reaction he had when he finally made a 3 vs GT. That emotion swings the opposite way too, it's like he gets in his own head and once he makes one mistake, they compound and affect the rest of his game (and team for that matter). I think it's fair of the fanbase to expect the most highly touted recruit in recent VT history to have better decision making and mental toughness in his game. It's on him and the coaching staff to get that figured out, not just work on his shooting mechanics and he'll come out of his slump. So, when his pass to Tobi resulted in a TO on Saturday, it felt like a microcosm of all the frustration I had felt towards Neo's game the last month. Late game situation, our best player has the ball in his hands, and he doesn't make the smart play. No I don't agree with the booing, but I understand the audible frustration that the fanbase has as a result of that play.
