I agree. I think of it the same way as I do with students who transfer for

academic reasons: I'm sorry that VT did not work out for them, but I wish them well in their future endeavors. When they are a successful in the future, I'm happy for them. If they happen to be in a competition against VT, I'll for the VT participants over them. If they happen to win, I'll celebrate their success afterward. I don't expect everyone to feel the same way, but within the academic house, the nature of things is that students come, most of them graduate, but some leave before that occurs. If that occurs, I'll look at the reasons why it happened to see if there is something we should be doing differently. (I'm hopeful that the coaches do similar things.)
