Well, you've got to look at the term "sold out."
As I've posted on here previously (many times) there are three "types" of season ticket holders. Regular season ticket buyers like people on this board (cumulative giving, payment of seat premiums, etc.). Then there are several hundred tickets set aside for the Hokie Club/AthDept. Finally, there are several hundred set aside for "other contractual obligations." I've always referred to them as corporate seats. Then there are ADA set asides, which may include the first group I mentioned. Then there are student seats. What's left, ain't much. Then, at some point, the VTTO "sells" those remaining seats to SeatGeek (at what price, I don't know). Thus, it is easy to say a game is sold out. When VT says that, they always refer people still interested to SeatGeek.
There have been several instances this year (including ACC games), where people sitting next to us have said they bought their tickets from SeatGeek at $1 to $4 per seat. They said the SeatGeek fees were higher than the price.
The AthDept/VTTO has always "gamed" the ticket sales, and will continue to do so. Last night, to say actual attendance was 50% would be generous. A better sign would have been the parking near Cassell. It was no where 50% full.

Attendance last night? Looked 50% full at best.

Why, because most fans don't want to see us lose. We're often the underdog**
