Its complicated

NIL is not a general fund, and not controlled or accessed by the VT athletic department. Folks give to Triumph either for general athletes, programs or specific athletes. coaches can work it by soliciting NIL givers give to program x or players of their program. Its not just Triumph by itself. That 'development' piece takes alot of coaches time, some are good and some not interested. I know Pry is very active in this area. However, we are seeing old coaches in the business saying i dont have enough time, to coach, dont need to do this. After the State of Va new law, universities can create their own NIL entity as well. That will allow them more flexibility to address NIL needs for all student athletes. That is not set up. Also, VT like the other P4 schools will have in 2026 to carve out of their ahltetic budgets 26 million a year for players pay. by court order. Simply, schools will have to meet that or breaking the law. (they can 1) pay it, 2) cut sports to find the 26 million or 3) downsize, (its a lower level cost for Group of 5 1-aa, Div 2, and Div 3. All universities signed off on the settlement. Also, the era of developmental basketball is over. with player transfers and early out for the pros, their is not incentive for top players to sit on bench and learn the system, and move on. I think that is hurting VT as well. This more statement of the times. This is why we are seeing so many legacy coaches getting out of the business. Its simply something they didnt sign up too. Also some AD are leaving, ... they didnt sign up for being basically a president/general manager of professional business. For VT, its prime revenue source (and EVERYTHING collapses without it ) is football. it drives all the hotels, and restaurants with critical customers, and revenue that carries the entire year for a 90 mile radius. So of course all the initial funding must go to football HOWEVER. VT fans and university to compete in power 4, the effort in football but double every year to support basketball and other sports. It;'s not special, its the new world. and that is just to maintain......I Think VT knows it and are working on solutions. however, for basketball, its going to get real ugly before better.
