I don't boo my own team but a 19-22 year old is a grown man and would get

boos at other schools as well, VT is not the only school that boos players. Neo is a 5-star future first round pick that is has having a very hard time adjusting to the physicality and pace of American basketball, he would likely get boos from any fanbase that was depending on him to live up to the hype.
