anyone who thinks more NIL dollars is going to magically transform Mike Young as a coach, or VT as a basketball program, is mistaken. Young has shown, for many decades now, that he is a high floor, low ceiling coach. This year was the first that you could really point to NIL as impacting VT's roster, so we'll discount our current record. Prior to that, in Young's tenure at VT, his overall record averages out to 18-13. His ACC record averages out to around 9-10. Are those numbers significantly better than this year? Of course. Are those the type of numbers that VT should aspire to as a program? Many might say yes, IMHO we could and should do better. I expect MY will be back next year and also expect we will be able to attract a better caliber of transfer as a result of better NIL funding. What I don't expect is for that to translate into a 20+ win season (something Young has only managed once at VT) or an ACC record above .500 (something he has only managed twice at VT). All of the NIL talk this year was predictable, and entirely justified. But it seems to be obscuring some larger truths about the state of the basketball program.
