Better defensively, more reliant on hero ball offensively to score

VT only won game last year when both Pedulla and Kidd played well on offense and one of Collins or Nickel scored in double figures, primarily because they were 2 of the worst defenders in the ACC at their positions. The efficiency they brought on offense canceled out what they gave up on the other end. This year's roster is significantly more athletic but doesn't have near the amount of offensive efficiency we saw last year with Kidd and Cattoor, both those guys were elite by efficiency metrics. I fully expect offense to look like a work in progress most of the year and for this board to blow up about "hero ball" being played by Miller and Jaydon Young. MY likes to play with 2 bigs but this year we'll see a lot more 4 out on offense since Poteat is our only guy who can score on the block. Defensively I think we'll see a step forward since we'll only have to cover for weakness at the 5, 1 through 4 we should be able to match up physically which will be a nice change of pace. We still have the glaring lack of "all-around" players that we had last year, Cattoor was the only guy you could really count on to be good on both sides of the court and the puzzle didn't fit together enough to make the tournament. This year I believe we have more guys who can contribute on both ends; Miller, Burnham, Young, Brown, and Johnson all look the part of 2-way players if albeit lower level than Cattoor. If Poteat and Lawal can combine for 40 mpg and Jones contributes 10 we could glue together a frontcourt that at the very least brings good offensive efficiency (dunks, layups, 3 pointers) and defensive stopping power (Poteat & Jones are big bodies, Lawal is a rim protector).

That's about as big of a roster turnover as it gets.
