The whole NIL = salary but not funded by revenue is ludicrous to me
I get there are people that have money to burn, but the thought of spending that to pay some college kid a salary when you see zero financial ROI is ludicrous.
The reason professional sports exist is not to win championships, it’s because if you pay to build a good team you see huge ROI. Eventually you make so much it doesn’t matter, or you’re a Saudi Sheik and you’re in sports for a different reason, but most owners make a ton.
The big donors get names on buildings and are influential in decision making which is worthwhile. But donors in the 4-5 figure range basically get nothing but the satisfaction of maybe winning a few more games each year and a seat in the stadium. That could result in the school moving conferences and making more, but you’ll never see a return personally.
VT has primarily younger alumni, with where the economy looks to be heading and inflation as it is, I have no idea why you would throw money away like that. Clemsons IPTAY is probably the best model to follow honestly since it’s so low commitment.
FWIW friends of mine from other schools feel the same way, we’re all well into the middle 6 figures or low 7s in HHI but I don’t know of anyone who has donated for athletics. I will say I hear from UNC fundraisers about 6-8 times a year, I heard from VT once about 3 years ago but that’s it.

Any Hokie billionaires out there that could rain their assets on VT?
