In 1958 we recruited and landed Bucky Keller, the top scholastic basketball player in the State. His Newport News HS team won three Group AAA titles in a row (56 straight games). They were good enough to get both of their coaches hired by colleges; Bill Chambers to William & Mary and Lefty Drisell to Davidson. In 1964 we recruited and landed Chris Ellis, the top scholastic basketball player in the State. HIs team had just completed an undefeated State Championship season He played for Tech's most successful NCAA Tournament team; in the Elite 8 we lost to Dayton for a spot in the final four. If not for an injury to Glen Combs and a couple of questionable calls we would have a Final 4 banner in the rafters. For those of you who think basketball was different back then, you are right. The All-American team featured Lew Alcindor, Wes Unseld, and Elvin Hayes in the frontcourt.
