be gone. It is a compliment to the program and hard work for so many. For those with eligibility left, Jack (as you mention) will be a potential/possible 1st rounder, which would be a second straight year with a (if) 1st rounder coming out of VT. There is no doubt he is not coming back. Carson Jones is pretty high level and more than (or very) likely is not coming back (he even did Senior day Saturday but that doesn't always guarantee anything). He has shown his outfield skills and has a plus arm, and runs very well. Great looking athlete. Hack is not coming back. When you talk with the scouts, they have a total different set of evaluation stuff they look at than regular fans. Most of the things they see with him can be overcome and so many of his hits/rougher patches etc. the pros saw as soft stuff (hit wise) and not a concern. Every pitcher has a day or two where things don't go their way. But he has an immense gas tank, throws an easy 95 mph, has great sink and can throw a great slider off of that fastball. He missed on a few spots this year in a couple of games, but he is not going to be better served coming back. Would love him too, of course, but would be shocked if he did. Worley and Green, and I hate that they didn't get a chance to play at home again a few more times, are not going to be pitching (unless some unbelievable medical miracle happens) next year for anyone (certainly not by a college baseball season's timeline). That would mean a 2025 college season, and they aren't going to wait for two more years in college. They, more than likely, take where ever they can get drafted and start in the pro game. Where they get drafted is an interesting question, but CW was already a higher round guy coming into the year. There absence was clearly felt this year and hate it for them this happened. Wish them all the best. I will be surprised if Brady Kirtner doesn't get a nice draft spot, and moves on as well. His growth on the velocity side to go with his elite spin is going to be hard for the pros not to jump on now. So, we might want to prepare for the moving along of BK. I would not be surprised if Hank Weycker (he went through Senior Day as well) doesn't return, but I don't know where he stands with things. We will have our entire infield returning, and there may be position adjustments so time will tell on that. Some younger folks will need to step in and take over. We will, almost assuredly, need to grab some transfers, and will continue to move forward. I would like to say one or two other things. These guys (and our current returnees), that are leaving the program, have done wonders to build VT Baseball into an entirely different animal. Just the attention alone has changed, and judging from the game day's at AUBP, the support is really changing, not to mention the game day "conversation" on the these message boards. You can't get suites at the stadium, there is a waiting list for the hospitality tables, and statewide interest has changed from a recruiting standpoint. When some think this year has been a "struggle" (and I am not debating that issue just pointing out where the bar has been raised to and we all wish some things had gone differently) and we are coming down to the last weekend or two for an NCAA bid, have 18 quad one and two wins (which is still in the top 20-25 range for quality of wins), then we have dramatically changed our place in college baseball's rank and file. As more support (privately) continues to come in, we can do what most big programs can do (within reason). Enjoy the rise we are experiencing, the respect we are gaining (from not only peer schools, but recruiting, and media attention) in the college baseball community, and try not to chirp on every single play during a game on what we should have been done different. While, it is good to have passion, we are still relatively/very new at staying at the upper tier level. It is possible that 4 of the 16 2022 Super Regional teams don't make the tournament this year (including the two that played for the title). It is hard, and an extremely fine line to win at this level. If we have four to five other hits (total), even with our injuries, in different spots this year, we could be 34-14 and 15-11 and probably hosting again. My point with that is we are in the thick of things and we couldn't say that 4-5 years ago and to illustrate how fine a line it is at this level. Appreciate the guys that come here and work hard. The guys playing here now had many other options to play ball at other high level schools. Time to keep pushing forward as a program and root for the guys that go in the draft, not only for them on a personal level, but for the good of our program. ** Edited by VTScoop at 5/15/2023, 4:57:44 PM
