2025 Transfers

With the Hokies season coming to an unfortunate end, I have begun looking towards the 2025 season and how the roster might get built out. My guess is that we will look to find a few players to play key roles out of the transfer portal, which has begun to fill out. My projection for the positions of need in the portal with players leaving and looking at the incoming freshmen are as follows: - (2) quality bullpen arms - (1) potential starting pitcher - (1) starting outfielder - (1) starting infielder Understand that my evaluation of a need for a starting caliber player doesn't mean I don't trust a rising freshman or sophomore to take over, but rather that having competition at the spot will be healthy. With those positions in mind I have put together a list of probable players to chase, whom are listed in the portal. I based my search on position, recent trends in types of schools we have gotten incoming transfers from, as well as the knowledge that the players likely have to have been seen by the coaches in some capacity. So you'll notice some teams are local to the state of VA and some schools were on our schedule in the past 2 years. Below is my list of probable transfer acquisitions as of the morning of 5/31/24. Eli Trop: UPenn (SR) - relief pitcher 2024 stats: 3.63 ERA in 17.1 IP w/ 22K and 9BB Carson Ozmer: UPenn (SR) - relief pitcher 2024 stats: 3.00 ERA in 30 IP w/ 36K and 13BB Jake Hyde: Georgetown (SR) - 1b/RF 2024 stats: .297 Avg .965 OPS in 56 GP w/ 36BB and 58K Played 13 games in the Cape League with a .130 Avg, but getting the invite is still prestigious Matt Scannell: Princeton (SR) - OF 2024 stats: .277 Avg .903 OPS in 43 GP w/ 8HR 27BB Got a cup of coffee in the Cape. Followed by assistant coach Tyler Hanson on twitter Tom Chmielewski: Princeton (SR) - Lefty Starting Pitcher Coming off an injury where he didn't pitch at all in 2024 2023 stats: 3.40 ERA in 76.2 IP and 13 GS w/ 73K 19BB Cape League stats: 3.21 ERA in 28 IP and 6 GS w/ 23K and 6BB. Fastball up to 94mph w/ solid curve and slider combo Likely immediately files into a weekend starter role if he's healthy Followed by Player Development Head Kyle Sarazin on twitter Tyler DeMartino: Xavier (SR) - RF 2024 stats: .407 Avg in only 9 games (injury???) 2023 stats: .255 Avg .851 OPS in 43 GP w/ 10HR 14BB 30K Got a cup of coffee in the Cape. Appears to be a solid outfielder Followed by assistant coaches Elbin and Hanson on twitter Matt Hindy: William & Mary (JR) - lefty pitcher 2024 stats: 3.75 ERA in 60IP w/ 3.36 FIP and 20 K-BB% Ground ball pitcher w/ 59.4% GB rate in 204 and only 2.4 HR/FB% Got a 3 out save against Duke this year (SOMETHING WE BADLY COULD HAVE USED) Followed by Szefc and Sarazin on twitter I hold William & Mary pitching in high regard: 36th in the country in ERA and 21st in K/9. So I badly want a few of their pitchers after they surprisingly parted with coach McRae, whom I think is a great coach. Nate Knowles: William & Mary (SR) - starting pitcher 2024 stats: 2.48 ERA in 80 IP and 19 GS w/ 3.94 FIP 112K and 21.8 K-BB% Everett Catlett: Georgetown (SR) - lefty starting pitcher 2024 stats: 3.36 ERA in 77.2 IP and 13 GS w/ 4.40 FIP and 14.4 K-BB% Same high school as Carter Newman and Brett Renfrow
