With our stats is how that compares to the rest of the ACC as ERA has generally gone up last year and again this year. Between 2019 and 2023, the in-conference ERA for the ACC ranged from 5.02 (in 2021) to 5.85 (in 2022). Last year, the in-conference ERA was 6.35 and this year it is currently 6.03 so it seems scoring has jumped a bit. Regardless, our in-conference ACC rankings have regressed. From 2019 through 2022 (excluding 2020), we ranked 5th, 7th and 1st in ERA. From 2023 through 2025, we have ranked 12th, 7th and 13th. One big issue is we have seen worse performance from transfer pitchers the last two years. In 2022, we got really good innings from Jordan Geber, Graham Firoved, Kiernan Higgins and Jonah Hurney. In 2023, Anthony Arguelles was one of our few new transfers and he pitched well. In 2024, we had 6 new transfers throw at least 5 innings in ACC and all but one (Manning with a 5.40 era in 23.1 conference innings) had better than a 7.45 era in conference play. This year is similar as we have only 3 new transfer pitchers that have thrown at least 2 innings in conference play and all three have a 7.20 era or higher and then we have 3 other transfers (Berzonski, Yagesh, Drohan) that have pitched sparingly or not at all in conference games. We’ve also had some injury issues that have contributed. In 2023, we lost Griffin Green in the second half of the year and all of 2024. Christian Worley was a pro arm that missed most of 2023. We also had Andrew Sentlinger essentially miss all of last year. And then this year, we lost Griffin Stieg for the year and Madden Clement has missed all of ACC play thus far and unclear when he’ll return. Both of them would likely have been starters and would have allowed Marciano and Eisenreich to be relievers. That also doesn’t consider the more minor injuries to Eisenreich, LeJeune and Berzonski. The last item of interest is how some of our returning players over the years have struggled after having success. From 2022 to 2023, we returned 5 of 7 pitchers that threw at least 10 innings in conference play for our NCAA tournament team and all 5 of them had worse seasons in 2023 (Hackenberg from 3.10 era to 7.45 era; Green from 3.79 era to 4.91 era, Higgins from 2.04 era to 11.74 era, Weycker from 4.37 era to 5.21 era and Hurney from 3.86 era to 7.79 era). We are also seeing something similar with Grant Manning where he had a 5.40 in-conference era last year but has started poorly with a 11.81 era this year. Jacob Exum is also puzzling. He did improve from 2022 to 2023 (6.16 era to 3.68 era) but he has regressed from both those years to this year with a 13.50 era. It’s still early so hopefully both Manning and Exum can rebound, but it is concerning to see this from pitchers who previously had success.
