With the season wrapped up and transfer portal underway, below is a look at what we could potentially expect in the offseason. Recent Notes - Chase Swift entered the portal today. - JUCO signees RHP Luke Hayhow and LHP Jason Berglund decommitted from VT in May with Berglund committing to UTSA and Hayhow currently looking for D1 opportunities. Catchers - We typically carry 3 catchers which we are at currently with Anderson French (JR), CJ Oxendine (SO) and Justin Munoz (FR). I expect we’ll stick with that group if the staff feels like French (or Oxendine) can make a jump into the starter role for next season. Infielders & Outfielders - We are at 16 IF and OF currently (assuming Clay Grady doesn’t return) and I would expect we’ll keep around 13 so look for some attrition here. Things will also depend on whether Pete Daniel gets drafted and if we can retain Ethan Ball. If either or both of them don’t return, I could see us trying to land a starting caliber infielder in the transfer portal. I also think we’ll try to bring in a starting caliber outfielder in the portal. Connor Guy is a JUCO outfielder that could compete for a starting role but he doesn’t look like a surefire starter so the staff could look to bolster the outfield with a more established transfer. Pitchers - With Chase Swift entering the portal and assuming Brett Renfrow and Preston Crowl go pro, we are at 17 pitchers for next year (11 RHP, 6 LHP). We rostered 20 pitchers this past season but that was with an online roster of 36 players which is two over the limit (and two of them redshirted) so I think we’ll target keeping 18 for next season. Given the challenges we had with pitching, I think we’ll try to bring in at least 2 or 3 pitchers in the portal and then likely see one less than we bring in hit the portal.
