Doesnβt matter how it looks or what it takes, just win the game and take
the uncertainty out of the NCAA selection process.

Other than good pitching, sound defense, and situational hitting today was
a great game (at least the weather was nice). I hope VT plays better at the ACCT - they may need one win.

The people running the athletic department are why this coach (and whoever
comes next) will struggle - canβt beat a basketball school with an undergraduate student population fo 6500. UFB is all I can say at this point.

Well if the second baseman could catch a cold in the rain it would have
been a bit easier on the pitching staff.

FWIW - he looks like he is trying hard not to limp, may be some type of
βlower body injuryβ as they say in hockey.

Man, this team is hard to watch. VCU gives the Hokies four runs on a weak
error by the SS so VT decides to return the favor by dropping a soft liner to third and then doing their Bad News Bears imitation by running into each other in the outfield. UFBβ¦

Agree, but win or lose they canβt get boat-raced like NC State did today -
it has to be a competitive game.

I think VT is well past the winter weather holding them back - looks like
it might be time to put the young guys in and see what they can do.

C - all of the above. I was surprised when Young said Wade was a friend of
his - doesnβt seem like his type of guy.

Especially on these turf fields where the bounces are true and get to the
infielder in a hurry. The quote from Moneyball - βthey are just giving you an out - take it and say thank youβ.

I suspect Kentucky will find some S$C change in the couch to spend for WBB.
Kenny is finding the sledding a bit more challenging than he did in the ACC - I wonder how much patience there is in Lexington for a team that isnβt contending for the conference championship?

With both MBB and WBB all games are snowflakes - you never can predict how
these teams will perform (especially on the road), so I doubt anything will be determined about the future either way.

The poor FT shooting may cost the Hokies this game - hopefully not but they
have to make those in the 4th quarter.

Well, he can go to the NBA G-League combine in the offseason like Lawal did
and find out where he stands compared to other draft hopefuls. Until then he needs to continue to work on all aspects of his game. If he is having trouble with expectations and negative feedback in Blacksburg then he has no hope of surviving in the NBA where everything is magnified x100. I wish him the best and hope he starts enjoying the journey a bit more in the coming weeks.

Duke has had trouble in Blacksburg recently, but this is not a good matchup
on paper. Luckily for VT, the game is played on the court - Go Hokies!

No, Duffy said as much in the post-game interview, but it doesnβt seem like
there is any way to predict this teamβs trajectory based on past performances - each game is a snowflake. I do believe their fundamentals are better and the effort (see rebounding) is much improved, but will that lead to Q1/Q2 victories down the stretch - who knows. I still think this team will go as far as their 3-point shooting will take them, and last night was not very encouraging on that front.

βWe review all the fears and anxiety which are so inherently symptomatic
of a losing team. The mind is a strange thing, men. We must begin by asking "What is losing?" Losing is a disease as contagious as polio. Losing is a disease as contagious as syphilis. Losing is a disease as contagious as bubonic plague - attacking one but infecting all. Ah, but curable.β The Hokies need a Roy Hobbsβ¦.

Also, while the players may be βfastβ they are not particularly quick and
there is a lack of physicality (hence the rebounding issues) - if this team does not shoot well (especially from 3) they are in big trouble.
Women's Basketball Board

Top to bottom that may be true - not sure if that is true for the upper end
of the conference (there are MBB squads that might win the βnatty), but there is going to be some upsets on the womenβs side this season. I hope the Hokies stay healthy and grow into a competitive team where everyone contributes.

I attended the game as well and my assessment is a bit more restrained than
yours. The lack of size and girth is going to be a problem in the ACC - there is no rim protector on this team and they seem to have trouble staying in front of people. I suspect Duffy wanted to work on entry passes and movement in this glorified scrimmage, but if this team doesnβt shot 40+% from 3 it is going to have issues against bigger, athletic teams - being fast isnβt enough if you canβt get and knock down open looks. As far as rebounding, no way this team has a 59-31 advantage in the ACC - they just arenβt physical enough. I hope the fun and gun works for Duffy, but this still looks like a work-in-progress to me. Good win and they managed to get to 100 unlike the men (due to better FT %).

John Szefc told Evan Hughes in the pre-game interview that one of the main
reasons for traveling 3.5 on a Tuesday was to showcase the team in Richmond due to the large number of alumni in the area. It seems like a no-brainer to promote the game and have an event for the Hokie fans. There are spaces available at The Diamond (not very stylish, but functional) where VT could have organized a meet and greet - just hard to understand what these people are doing. Apparently a good number of Hokies showed up to watch the Hokies squeeze past the Rams in 4.5 hours (UFB).

Maybe, but if I were VT HC and needed a basket on a key possession i would
run a play for Wenzel - she isnβt afraid, has a good handle, and excellent body control. Her shooting fundamentals could use some work, but she is a gamer and that is enough for me.

Thanks, I saw that when I logged into my Hokie account at 12. Might have
been helpful if VT sent the order of access with the announcement so as not to confuse the fans. So it goesβ¦

Duffy has done a great job of getting this group to function as a team and
win games - all the more impressive when you consider the injuries. I am looking forward to seeing what WBB looks like in four years.
Women's Basketball Board

The issues are experience and athleticism - no quick solutions to either of
those problems. Game time and S&C will help, but this roster is missing key pieces (unfortunately those MIA players are in Lexington) and requires some upgrades. It appears that Duffy can coach and I hope she and the staff can recruit at a high level.

I am sure both WWIII and Schlee looked good in practice against this
version of VT defense, so the coaches thought it might work out fine. Unfortunately, the Golfers defense is a bit better that VT at this point.

Right, thatβs called creative accounting - a lot of people have gotten rich
off college athletics. You think the TV deals keep escalating because there is no money to be made in this market?

The member constituents of the NCAA had 50 years of huge profits (many
billions) in MBB and football with very little labor costs - in most folks books that would be considered a massive win. Nothing lasts forever, so now the model must evolve to compensate the entertainers. It will take a some time, but it will work out eventually - there is just too much money in play.
