Dudley (Greensboro, N.C.) junior quarterback Hendon Hooker announced this afternoon that he will take his talents to Blacksburg to play for head coach Justin Fuente and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Hooker, a 6'4", 190-pound quarterback, chose Virginia Tech over Missouri, NC State, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, among others.

He told Spencer Turkin of ESPN Triad that Virginia Tech "felt like it was a great fit."

Asked by Turkin when he knew Virginia Tech was the place for him, Hooker, who visited Virginia Tech last week, said: "When we set foot on the big stage, on that game field, it just felt right."

Hooker added that new Hokies head coach Justin Fuente "has the confidence in me. Iā€™m just going to work hard for him and try to get him a championship."

In the Dudley star, Virginia Tech gets a prospect who completed 64.1-percent of his passes while throwing for 2,234 yards and 17 touchdowns last season as a junior. A quarterback with dual-threat capabilities, Hooker rushed for 1,217 yards and 15 touchdowns on 122 carries last season while leading Dudley to a 13-2 record.

Scout.com ranks Hooker as a 4-star recruit, while 247Sports and Rivals each rank him on the 3-star level. The talented signal caller becomes the third prospect to commit to Tech's 2017 Class, joining defensive back Devante Smith of Stonewall Jackson (Manassas, VA) and defensive end/tight end TyJuan Garbutt of Riverbend (Fredericksburg, VA). Both Hooker and Garbutt are rated 4-star recruits by at least one of the four national recruiting outlets.

With today's development, Virginia Tech projects to have four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster in 2017. The list includes would-be senior Jerod Evans, would-be junior Dwayne Lawson, would-be red-shirt freshman or sophomore Joshua Jackson, and true freshman Hendon Hooker. This projected scholarship count is still fairly low, so I wouldn't be surprised to see head coach Justin Fuente accept another quarterback commitment -- or at least a quarterback/athlete type of player who could play other positions -- in this class.
