What can Philip Montgomery do to manufacture more points for Virginia Tech? (Jon Fleming)
Grinding for points is hard. Phil Montgomery and the Hokie coaches are dealing with a lot of that grinding right now. The offense is having a hard time getting more than 24 points in a game, and the defense is having a hard time keeping opponents under 30.

We can't run up-the-middle with FSU's super big nose-guard. Therefore, some quick short passes to slot or TEs might give us a chance. That said, Drones has not developed passing skills in 4 years.

It probably wouldn't work since you'd have to accommodate the entire program to focus on running it, but I'd love to see some single wing or some variation off of it. As annoying as it was for my alma mater to play Giles County every year, I loved watching them run it. Drones looks like he could be a single-wing halfback that can throw the ball some out of it.

Don't run on 2nd and 10? Don't set up 3rd and 8-12 because running on 2nd and long consistently isn't going to create manageable 3rd downs.
How about getting the TE involved more in short-to-intermediate passing?
How about actually having a short-to-intermediate passing game,.
How about an occasiional jet sweep? Make those players in motion mean something.
Study the plays that opposing offenses do and copy them.........

I know you can’t run on every down, but another advantage of running the ball is using up clock and keeping the ball away from the Florida State offense.
Again, maybe I’m wrong, but if we lean too heavily on the pass at the beginning of the game, and this offense performs like it has all year with the passing game, that means three and out.
FSU is favored by two touchdowns right now and if they get up by 14 points early on, we are going to be forced to pass the ball to try to play catch-up and I don’t see that working.
I don’t see us winning this game but a game plan that features a heavy emphasis on the pass is a sure way to give the game away… And I’m just basing this on how this offense has performed this season. Completing a few passes and even some long ones is nice, but can you actually see this offense sustaining drives by going heavy on the pass?
In closing, it has been very hard to watch the UVA offense run drives of 12 or 15 plays. Why can’t we be the ones who are sustaining drives not to mention burning clock so our defense doesn’t get gassed.

The title of your article is part of the VT offensive struggles. They have to manufacture points, instead of having a true offensive identity. I like Montgomery a lot as a person and interim coach, but his offensive style doesn't fit with the personnel. It's just the wrong fit. If FS jumps out to a two or three score lead, it could be disastrous for the VT offense. VT will have to keep this score close throughout the game in order to have an opportunity to win. GO HOKIES

How can Virginia Tech manufacture more points?
One way is to definitely cut down on the personal foul penalties.
Another way is the offense needs to be able to sustain long drives and this is not going to happen going into second and third down needing 10 or more yards for the most part. The offensive line has shown that it can run block and I think running on first down is going to keep the offense on schedule. What we cannot do is have more three and outs that have often started with an incomplete pass on first down.
When the offense cannot sustain drives, they are going to put the defense in the bad spot of having to defend a short field, and also be exhausted due to being out on the field again after only three plays and a punt
Anyway, that’s my two cents.

so many of our plays look great on a chalk board but you hit the nail on the head, execution has to improve. A drop or a missed block, especially on 4th and short, can win and lose the game. This Hokies team has thin margins but no pressure. Go out and have fun.

I don't like this match-up against the FS defense. However, their style is very aggressive, so misdirection, screens, RPO's with 2 options could work against that defense. My biggest concern is the O line because FS D line is fast and strong. I expect a lot of twist and stunts throughout the entire game. Hopefully that's something the O line has worked on these past couple of weeks.
