Good grief, Brandon. That's an amazing and insightful article!

“ Take Aeneas Peebles, a 300-pound dude who played every snap like an angry tiger with a rocket stuck up its rear end. His PFF score last year as a starter on a vulnerable Hokie defense was almost identical to his score two years ago with Duke, when he was coming off the bench, had fewer overall snaps, and had a better supporting cast to keep offenses from keying on him so much.”
Better supporting cast… at Duke. Ugh! remember the days when we said UVA had to start beating Duke on a regular basis before they talked about conference championships. Sadly, that’s us now.

MAYBE....just MAYBE...VT needs to look into Sports Medicine RECOVERY infrastructure and staff like the top programs have already done. Everything your article states is true. What I didn't see and have not seen from VT Athletics is the commitment to athlete recovery in the modern day infrastructure that starts immediately post game. I'm talking cryotherapy, float tank therapy, hyperbaric chambers, red light therapy in addition to nutrition. Major programs like Bama, ND, UGA, LSU, Clemson, and Tennessee ALL have facilities dedicated to these post practice, post lift, and post game therapies in order to help athletes recover faster and better for the next game. Here's the links for reference:

Our athletes can lift hard, run like mother effers, etc... but if they don't have the same recovery infrastructure, tools, facilities, cutting edge technology that peer major programs have, we will always be at a disadvantage no matter how much we bleed, give extra effort, hard work, leave it all on the field mentality Ferguson puts in. It's still sports science and kinesiology and our Ath Dept is at a major disadvantage in these areas.

Good, in depth. read, Brandon. Regarding Deeg’s time at ODU, was it more about lack of conditioning, or was it just that most of ODU’s Jimmy’s and Joe’s are just not of P4/5 caliber so bigger, stronger and, better conditioned teams just wore them down over the course of the game.

TLDR. I tried but gave up 1/2 way through. Break up the paragraphs, something. Run it through Chat GPT, etc. Tough slog there

I’m sorry, but that was way too long and in depth about stuff most of us would fall asleep reading, which I did with all the respect. Was hoping to read more about what was actually going on with Jared Ferguson and the team and improvements they had made so far under his coaching. He is a disciple of Mike Gentry, who knew exactly what he was doing and one of the best ever in strengthen and conditioning. Wish there had been more about his actual coaching and results so far.

S&C is unique for each player. What works for one, may not work for the other, and figuring out ways to monitor as such is a challenge. I think AI will greatly benefit S&C in the future.

South Carolina and a Heisman hopeful QB will certainly test our guys. Regardless of play call, sometimes you still need to win at the point of attack. When the D does that consistently we win.
