Great write up Andy as usual. We watched a lot of the Duke - SMU game. Might be possible that Duke blindsides Clemson?

      Miami, not Clemson.

Isn't total career punting yards more about # games played and poor offenses than anything else, of course if you played a lot of games you're likely a decent to great punter,

It's my understanding Tuten was not wearing a boot after he returned from the locker room. Hope that means he'll be OK.

He walked around the field with a slight limp after the game. Had walking boot on at the Waffle House Sunday am. He plays at SU But less than 100% most likely.

I know there wasn’t much to analyze on those four “drives” but curious to know whether the play calling changed or just poor execution?

Ask Duke how valuable special teams are. If they have a decent kicker or a line that blocks that game never goes to overtime and SMU is no longer unbeaten in acc play. Really have to feel for the defense of the blue devils. 6 take aways and the offense/kicking game can’t get them the win.

Andy: Agree with your comments on Peter Moore, but does it seem to you (as it does to me) that he is dangerously slow in getting his punts away? That said, it’s tough to argue against his results and career accomplishments.

No..he's a "one step" punter. Its clear he has time, so, he's not rushing things....which he shouldn't.

YES!!!!! He looks like he's moving in slow motion and right now I'm expecting that Clemson (and possibly others) will have the athletes to exploit that.

I loved your #3 comment regarding the woeful performance of the offense following the third TD. I just don't understand the mediocrity on those 4 drives. I personally give the defense a lot of credit to prevent a TD in those sequences when they were essentially on the field the final 20 minutes. Sure hope this crew can travel north and put an end to the jinx in the Carrier Dome. I refuse to call the stadium by any other name. It has literally been a "house of horrors" for VT- no pun intended regarding Halloween. One win in 30 years!! Ouch!! Go Hokies.

It was, is and always will be the Jiffy Pop dome and until we prove otherwise that flat as a pancake field is the bane of all hokie aspirations. It took a superhuman effort by Mike Vick to overcome the bad juju that inhabits that place. As good as they were, neither Brian Randall nor Jerod Evans were able to get it done in that claustrophobic echo chamber. To me this will be a bigger test than Clemson for a team that's just starting to find the confidence in itself that it needs to win those close games. They won't have that insane Lane Stadium atmosphere to juice them up for that 4th quarter to finish out a game or pull off a come from behind win.

Great write-up as always. Completely agree about playing Tuten at that point in the game. There was still time for anything to happen (ask Miami about GT last year).

spot on hidden yards was critical to VT Win! GTQB#2&3 were pinned in deep in their territory for starting positions several times and that aided VT's D great day for Punter Moore & return specialist Lane now onto Sorryexcuse! Let's Go--- Hokies!!! crush sorryexcuse!

It will always be the air conditionless Carrier dome.

Andy, I’m not entirely sure I agree with your assessment of the defense. That unit still gave up too many 8, 10, and 15 yard runs. Also - imo the pass defense was inconsistent at best. Everything else the same about VT’s Defensive effort, what conversation are we having today if GT’s receivers didn’t repeatedly drop perfectly thrown passes they should have caught when they were wide open? What we saw from the defense will beat mediocre teams, but good teams will still boat race this unit.

You mean like undefeated top 5 Miami did? I am not a big fan of Marve but give the team some credit. The defense has improved!

There's not a lot of 8, 10, 15 yard plays with a net 96 yards rushing for the day.

       Howie_1 October 28, 2024 at 8:46 AM

They gave up one run for 17 yards. All the rest were for less than 10, doesn't seem like a lot to me.

GT had three solid drops. The final pick hit the GT player between the #s and would have scored if not for the boink off the pads to Jones who was trailing by a couple steps.

Both punt units need a shout out. Moore had great punts, but our coverage gave up next to nothing on returns. GT’s punter also had a nice day, but our return team consistently got yardage back. On a day with 17 punts, and a stalling offense, those yards made a big difference.

Great write as always!! Wish someone would analyze the flaws with PFF scores because they don’t always match visuals and a lot of coaches don’t put emphasis on them. They don’t take into the account the PFF score of the player opposing and etc.

Excellent summary of "Brent's (not Buzz) World." Definitely ensures well be watching games and W-L records, and reading TSL articles and watching podcasts.

Never underestimate having a good punter and FG kicker that sets the floor.
