TSL Subscribers Made the Call: Heavy Contact Behind the Line
Boy, did anyone who sold a Tech receiver having 5+ receptions this week take a shellacking on Saturday, not unlike the one Malachi Thomas took in week 1 (I feel like TSL should have a rimshot button available on Subscribers articles by default at this point). But should the shot Thomas took against Vandy have been legal? Let’s see what the Subscribers thought of it.
One of my favorite aspects of writing these pieces is hearing what you all think of various calls, and you guys had some excellent observations on this one. Here’s a sampling of the comments before I get to my full thoughts on this one.
Definitely not PI. Thomas was behind the line of scrimmage and contact happened while KD was in his delivery motion. I also do not see that there was a PF or targeting. Sometimes there are plays where the WRs and RBs can get de-cleated just like there are times when a WR going over the middle gets nailed by the safety. It’s part of the game and as long as there is no contact that looks intentional to the head, you pick yourself up and say nice hit and wait to get a chance to block that SOB next time. - gahokie
If that was a Hokie doing that to a Cavalier, Seminole, Hurricane etc. and they threw a flag I would be losing my mind. Football is a contact game – let them play, even though I didn’t like seeing that. - SmithDM07
