   A, CC: "As soon as I got to campus, things started to take a turn for the worse: [2001, 2002, & 2003]" thank goodness the TSL offices are off-campus! B. I resent that we can pay an athlete $250,000 (or more) for a couple ads (or whatever else) and she/he has no contract that obligates him/her to stay at VT beyond that. If there isn't a contract signed between the college and the player for every paying opportunity they are offered, then shame on the institution and the payer for mismanagement. This is worse than the professional leagues "free agency". At least there the greedy player's former professional team gets some sort of remuneration and recompense for their loss. What do colleges receive for what {education, housing, food, personal travel (COA), use of practice facilities, coaching, weights and off season conditioning, med staff availability (and most surgical services and rehab for serious injuries), complimentary tickets, warm ups and team attire, special academic tutors and tutorial rooms, etc.} they gave the player? ... An empty roster spot to fill? disappointed fans? and coaches with more heartburn over roster management, winning ball games and championships, and keeping their jobs?

   Sons of Saturday Podcast had a very informative discussion on the NIL, yesterday. The way I take it, the new law allows the school to basically help the student athlete to get in touch with their NIL sponsor and can help them manage their NIL income, such as paying taxes. The school can’t just pay a player to play or for performance. It remains to be seen how all of this pans out.

      This law will stimulate national dialogue but until there is a standard that is applied to everyone,, equally, I would tread softly. 'Pay for play' is a slippery slope. A good while back I heard that Texas had the Manning kid committed for $10M. Could that possibly be true? I heard, today, that the NCAA recently came down on Florida State because a coach simply drove an athlete to a third party NIL introduction. Our University's foundation was established on a bedrock of integrity. Let's move forward and do things the right way.

      The school can pay players, directly or indirectly, for the use of their name, image, and likeness. It's semantics. Think of it this way: the scholarship and ancillary benefits are for their performance, and the cash is to market the school/team through the use of their name, image, and likeness -- on websites, billboards, all the media appearances they do, etc. Again: semantics. What you're describing is actually more like what it was before the new law.

   If athletic department funds can be used for NIL purposes, it won't be long before the P2 schools obtain that same ability and with their financial advantages they will completely dominate the recruiting of blue-chip athletes.

      Their resources are already close to unlimited. They already dominate the recruiting of blue-chip athletes. If they want to beat us out for a player, they will always have plenty of money to do it. At least now we're bringing a knife to a gunfight. Used to be just a squirt gun.

   Who is the 4th safety in the rotation? Reddish, Childress or transfer? I had to look up Childress after the spring game, looks like he's been a special teams guy.
