Virginia Tech fans have heard about the six-hour recruiting radius for a long time. It was a staple of Frank Beamer’s recruiting philosophy in Blacksburg, and Brent Pry has continued that trend since he was introduced as Tech’s head coach in late 2021.

Anyone who can drive from VB to Blacksburg in 5 hours deserves a medal.

When I moved from Richmond to Charlotte, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that I was an hour closer to Blacksburg.

When VT joined the ACC I was a season ticket holder living in Raleigh NC. Most of our "away games" were much more relaxing outing than the all day trek to Blacksburg.

  Amen to that! I lived in NN for 2 years and drove to Bburg monthly. I only took 64-81 twice. Both times, I left Newport News at 4 AM so I could get through Richmond before traffic got bad. There's not enough money for me to drive that way regularly... and between Hampton Roads and Lunchbag, it's a pretty relaxing drive.

Seeing that Charleston, WV, and Blacksburg are 2 hours and 23 minutes apart was surprising to me. It is rare you see people going the speed limit on the WV Turnpike unless they're an out-of-stater or 18-wheeler.

It hit me last fall just how far Blacksburg is from the DC area. I was looking up driving times from here (Arlington, VA) and, per Google, it is actually a shorter driving time to Rutgers in NJ than it is to drive to Blacksburg. Wow. I *almost* drove up to the Rutgers game based on that info. In retrospect, glad I didn't, haha.

Not much difference between distance to in-state and out-of-state recruits...all the more reason that finding a way to get those out-of-state student athletes in-state tuition could be impactful.

It didn’t hit me until this year when my son was looking at colleges. NC State and Penn State are about the same driving time from our location as VT. (Of course NCSU could be heavily influenced by I-95.). I don’t know why I never realized it before. I was floored.

  Living in New England with a freshman at VT has highlighted to me and my wife that our beloved alma mater is not a particularly easy place to get to...by plane, train, or automobile. :)
