Antwaun Powell-Ryland had a great year for Virginia Tech. (Ivan Morozov)
I thought I’d sneak in some Virginia Tech regular season superlatives that have been brewing in the back of my mind. They’re on the oddball side of things—I’m sure there’ll be plenty of “MVP” and “Rookie of the Year” pieces from other writers—but made with seriousness for good performances that didn’t get as much recognition.

Excelllent points. Top newcomer would be an interesting one - Drones, Tuten have to head the list but the coaching staff did a great job getting talent in the door.

This was a fun read! I was particularly interested in the Golden Touch Award to S&C. In the back of my mind, I was asking what's going on with them. Are they living up to expectations? I think you answered that!

Great article. Minor quibble: pic caption says Xavier is defensive tackle.
Late 80s Hokie
It's little details like that that can ruin an entire article for me (TIC).
And I couldn't agree more with the Pheldarius Payne "I Didn't See That Coming" award. Before his injury last season, he was the "eh, he might help" guy that transferred from Nebraska. Didn't expect him to turn into the destructive force he became this year.

Great article, Brandon.... appreciate what you do...

Very good article. Hope they all are coming back next year.
Bayside Hokie
Very unique look at the not so obvious accomplishments.
No doubt all of these guys are big part of a team on the rise.
Thanks for the inside look!

Thanks for another year of great, educational writings BP.
Always good stuff.

Very nice. I'm not a big "gotta have all of the technical details" that your usual articles have, so this was a great read for me.

A great read. I just love the Hokie coverage at TSL.

Need more awards.

I'll give you mine: Bryan Randall staying upright award when there was no viable backup: None awarded b/c there was a viable backup, but Drones did stay upright leading to more consistency on offense. He could have won this award.
the Mark Leal "me? in now!?" award: None this year.
The JuJu Clayton pretend backup/at least we got somebody award: None this year about as deep a QB roster as we've had in a whlle Two starters with developmental freshman, you don't realize how good we had it this year.
Brandon Motley I'll be darned, the backup won the game award. In hindsight it doesn't make as much sense but maybe give it to Drones in spades, he came through in the clutch.

Great stuff. Thank you for pointing out things a lay person such as myself might not have noticed.

"Here’s the sequence from Rutgers I used a while back"
Marshall, maybe?

Great thoughts, Brandon. And thanks for the shoutout to S&C. Like a holder, they're not noticed until something goes wrong. For the young'uns out there, S&C was the backbone of the program during its rise in the 1990's.
