Hudson Card is the best quarterback Virginia Tech has faced so far. (Ivan Morozov)
This week, we’ll examine the passing games that Virginia Tech has faced so far and compare them to what the Hokies will face over the next eight games. We’ll also talk a little big more about the run defense (unfortunately), as well as Tech’s situation at left guard.

So according to PFF and this article the statement that Pry says there is team improvement is total nonsense.

I thought this was a pretty good article on Tech's defense.

GO HOKIES!

Seriously, if I were the Pitt coach, I would run the ball on every play. Not a single pass during the game and walk out of Lane Stadium with a 23-10 win over the Hokies.

The way teams are running on the Hokies the opposition could send out Zach Wilson (current QBR 26.7) and still win the game. Until VT stops the run (or at least stops giving up huge plays) and starts establishing the run on offense, they are going to have issues.

I wonder how Ballance (walk on) graded at LB. I realize he has not played very much.

Why don't you get Brandon Patterson to do a review of one of the players (let's say Norell Pollard) using film from the Rutgers and Marshall games. To me it seems that it may be possible to see why he goes from his worst to best game in two weeks. Perhaps it is the person next to him in the VT defensive line that makes a big difference. Or the person lining up against him on the offense that makes the difference. I agree that best to worst in two weeks is odd. Certainly, film must show something as someone out there assigned a grade to him for both games. Or maybe the grades are really superficial. Just a thought.

Given the quality (lack of) of the QB's we're facing this season if we had even an average run defense and could score 27 point per game we'd likely win at least 7 games. Unfortunately, we can't.

Pry used the code "100-level" yet again in his recent presser. Implication was he thinks things are too complicated. I have wondered whether the D has gotten a pass because of the O's struggles -- but aren't they doing something similar, i.e., trying to shoehorn players into a pre-fabricated system they brought with them? A system that works fine when you've got superior athletes, but that doesn't work when you don't. Are we too aggressive when we should be trying to bend and not break? We don't have the same type of players his 2019 PSU defense did. And you've consistently called them out for cross-training LBs -- that might have been a luxury/"necessity" at LBU, but we're at 100-level: just learn one damn position at a time.

If things are “too complicated” then we’re not getting high football IQ players. It’s not that hard to recognize gaps and which ones you’re responsible for based on a defensive call. The issue with rotating so many LBs through the various LB positions may be tying their minds up. We really need to focus guys on one position and have them master that position

maybe the reads that determine the gap assignments have become complicated????

Too complicated for 5th and 6th yr Srs and 3rd yr LBs that all graded out much higher in the past? At what point to 5th and 6th yr guys graduate to 200 level, let alone 300 or higher?
