Quarterback Kyron Drones may be the only silver lining from Saturday's game in Piscataway for the Hokies. (Ivan Morozov)
PISCATAWAY, N.J. — If there was a silver lining from Virginia Tech’s 35-16 loss at Rutgers — and you’re digging fairly deep when that’s the first part of the sentence — it’s that Kyron Drones played well enough in his first career start to think the Hokies will be OK at quarterback going forward.

We saw some fight these past 2 weeks, albeit after abysmal starts. I really appreciated Fuga's passionate postgame comments. Team (and fans) need to pull together. The alternative is to fold. That's not acceptable.

Amen to those sentiments. This is a really young team with the injury bug forcing untested Freshman into roles where one bad read equals a TD for the other side. The locker room seems untied and we need to support these kids as they develop. Lack of talent in key spots like OL is going to take a few cycles to get over but we will get there sooner than later.

It is going to be interesting, going forward, to see how all these losses will affect recruiting. There is a lot of excitement by the staff about what they are building but that does not match what we see on the field.
Plus we need all of the Hokie fans we can get. No one has the right to ask someone not to be a fan.

I was at the game behind the Hokie bench. Game result may have been different by 5 plays:
1. VT Fumble on second play of game
2. RU TD on third play of game
3. Missed FG in first half
4. Dropped long pass in second half - Perfect pass by Drones - would have been a TD
5. 3rd & 3 TD run by RU
There is 24 points.
Drones is the guy going forward. He made a lot of nice throws. I think the talk of him being a runner and not a passer was overblown.

The Kool-Aide tasted much better in August.

Are the injuries really just bad luck or is this indicative of issues with the strength and conditioning department? The number of injuries is wild.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

There is a saying "you make your own luck". That sums up the last two games.
Good article Andy

Fuga should save his breath.

He’s a captain. That was well said & needed to be. Don’t be a dick
Mapmaker
Exactly. Fuga should be commended, speaking up was very tough. I have my doubts, but applaud this young man.

Well said..

Well-said hokiepro!

What a dick thing to say. Please stop being a Hokie fan. We don’t want you.

Bottom line for us and it is difficult to watch being such a die hard fan for years. Our OL is the worst in the conference and our overall linebacker play has been very poor
Hokie101
The offensive line looked better yesterday, not great. The defense gave up 256 yards rushing, that was one of several killers.
Felton dropped a sure touchdown
We have to avoid any more injuries and play with fewer mistakes to win any more ballgames

Good article Andy. I hope the Hokies keep fighting and are done with injuries. Proud of Fuga. He’s got heart and it’s evident he cares deeply about VT. Here’s hoping more things connect against Marshall and we have less turnovers next week and Drones keeps playing! Go Hokies?

Was Pollard out as well? Do we know what injury Tisdale has?
McHokie78
For some reason it just seems that VT always gets more injuries each year to key football players vs most other teams. We can’t seem to catch a break. Same thing in basketball.

My wife… “I said that years ago.”
Pry does not have his team ready to play. This has become the major concern and overshadows everything else.
bonedoc
Losing begets injuries (or vice versa)? It's a chicken or egg thing but winners seem to have less injuries or they find ways to perform in spite of them. I predict we will see more injuries this year.
phoenixhokie
This is jibberish. So Aaron Rodgers is a loser now that he’s got a bum knee too like SO MANY OTHER FOOTBALL PLAYERS. Everyone gets injured at some point.
