Man. You know the Hokies have fallen far when TSL is talking about splitting with Rutgers and Marshall as a hoped-for occurrence. Even on the road.

Too much negativity on this board. Haven't even played a game, just started fall camp and lots of the posters are extremely concerned about how the season is going to go and end. For once, I would love to see some good positive blurbs. I am a Hokie Scholarship contributor and I will be one even if we go 0-12. Don't need to get stressed out yet. Let the season play out and then see what happens. I said last year that year 3 would be Coach Pry's breakout year. I am sticking with that. I remember a few years ago that a lot of posters wanted to get rid of Coach Brooks, Women's Basketball Coach. Look at them now. WE have to give the coach and his staff time. You know Coach Pry was not left with a full cupboard when CJF was let go. Try to build a company and expect it to succeed in year one or two or three. It takes time, which a lot of you are not willing to give. Think about when you got your first job and how everything turned out that first year. Like the movie "A Field of Dreams". Build it and they will come. I believe Coach is headed in that direction. Some of you don't. Don't ruin it for the rest of us.

I don't blame Peter Moore. Stu Holt spread the field with idiotic punt coverage which made Moore change the way he kicked. Holt turned a potential All - ACC punter into HS punter in one short season, FG wasn't much better. Shibest won games for us and Holt lost them.

I don’t think 6 wins is enough to call it progress. Must find a way to 7 - 5. Many good coaches will say that is really the floor for a P5 program with a good coaching staff.

Unknowns are still Bowen and really whether Pry has what it takes to be head coach. Not just just a terrific assistant coach who charms everybody.

Hope the record improves, but more importantly I hope the play of the team improves. If team plays well and loses a couple games I could live with that. However if they look like they they did at times last year I will be very concerned

5-7 at best, expecting 4-8. Would love to be wrong! Tired of losing.

I certainly hope that 2023 is better than 2022 - mostly so I can stop thinking about how bad it was in 2022. Still haven’t been able to kill those brain cells in the past 8 months.

if that's what it takes, then divert some Triumph money for CC to go to Tangier Island or Ewing for a couple days. no offense to Hokies or anyone from those two corners of the Commonwealth; but neither are near or are Blacksburg - which qualifies as a vacation destination. good article, but would have liked to have heard more of CBF's opinion - quotes, discussion trends from recent acc football kick-off, etc. of what a "winning regular 2023 season" will be for him, his crew and our youngsters. and not just 7 wins or 8 wins. there's a lot more to "winning Virginia Tech football" than the W/L record. Go Hokies!

I dead on agree with you about the schedule. Tougher but not insurmountable and why I think 7 wins is possible.

Timely article for post-time prior to the horse race ("made for" by more than "difference of opinion"). Pry's efforts have put him at 7 out of 10 for fan support. He'll have to now earn on the field the +3, or 4, to get to 10+ support. Predominately, the quality of play will be the determining factor, with wins filling the gap. The staff ability and chemistry will be judged for the ultimate quality. IMO

From what I've gathered so far this year, it seems the biggest question mark still remains on the OL... which has me concerned. There's been steady improvement in mostly all other position groups.

Durham Hokie August 2, 2023 at 2:44 PM

I agree. OL is the position group of most concern.

    SCHokie1103 August 2, 2023 at 12:18 PM

Ya think he needs to win this year! Of coarse he does. Or he better be ready to make changes. This team will be steady and I believe much improved on D. The offense has to get better this year or Pry will have no choice to make changes. Bowen as the OC/QB coach has no excuses if the offense has a repeat of last year. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist or analyst to understand that. Go Hokies!!!!

Pry absolutely has to get better results on the field this season to avoid squandering the momentum gained this off season. Not to be blood thirsty, but I would love to see them put the boot to somebody this year - ODU and UVA being the most favored targets. Win at least 6 games and show some dominance somewhere along the way.

How about NCSU or FSU? ODU is aiming pretty low

    garethembrey August 2, 2023 at 10:50 AM

I just can't see this offense not being significantly improved from last season. Wells has a good history of being a solid QB when he has WRs who can get open and confidence they'll catch the ball. Last season, defenses had no reason to respect our receivers or our RBs, and Wells wasn't really given consistent opportunities to succeed; on paper, we should have a much better WR corps and two solid RBs. The biggest question is the O-line, which honestly can't be much worse; the fact that Randolph left after one season seems to imply he wasn't on the same page as the rest of the staff, so I'm hoping that situation is rectified under Crook.

Can he get a better coach to coach? CFB became a true coach- by positioning another to be a great coach- in CBF. The one thing that held CFB back from Bobby Bowden level success? He never found / could afford a top OC. Had VT gotten over the stinespring, etc. series of OCs and hired a CBF equivalent at OC (even if they moved on after a few years), VT would have achieved even more than its series of 10 win seasons. No 0-0 OTs v. WF. Can CBP find those next level coaches to return VT to a higher level? I don’t see him anywhere near a Bud Foster. But that doesn’t mean he can’t be the next Frank Beamer. May the August the 2nd be with you.

I couldn't hold myself back from all of the initials being used by reconhokie so I reached back to a great movie, Good Morning Vietnam for some levity... Adrian Cronauer : Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.?

I call false on the lack of a top OC-- at least in terms of production. Look at Massey's ratings. Bustle's offenses were as productive as Foster's defenses during the time they were both OC and DC (or co-DC).

          reconhokie August 3, 2023 at 6:57 AM

That’s 1 guy- and VT was the most competitive in history from 95-01. After that, 10 win seasons. VT played in some great bowls, but do we remember the last sugar bowl? I’m still hurting from it. VT has not had a solid OC since then.

    gemrooty August 2, 2023 at 10:22 AM

Great article, Chris. And the difference between "good" and "great" is that I agree with it almost entirely. I would add that while we will be playing teams with less-than-scary offenses, Marshall, Wake and Cuse have depleted defenses. And those are not programs that can easily reload. Plus we play Wake and Cuse at home. I would like to think we can win two of those games, ultimately leading to a bowl.

CC, hope you are correct on 6-6... If we get to 6 Pry should be coach of the year.. We are very average or below average at to many positions. GO HOKIES!!!
22.

    ANDYISGOLD August 2, 2023 at 9:58 AM

Biggest question for me is OC Bowen. Can he get this offense in the 50-60 range versus 100+ range? Stay above 75 and Pry needs a new OC.
    1.

       HokieACC August 2, 2023 at 11:54 AM

Couldn't agree more! Head Coach Pry is a long long term keeper, but seems we are locked in to OC Bowen for three years. Hope Pry isn't too stubborn to fire an under performing OC. Bowen needs to improve the offense this year and next or it's time to move on to another OC.

We need to beat Purdue at home. They lost a lot, like their coach, QB and best skill guys. They still have some talent but it’s a first year coach coming into his first road game
