Josh Fuga, carrier of the Lunch Pail, has a great perspective — of both his own culture and Virginia Tech's. (Will Stewart)
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Josh Fuga’s Polynesian pride was easy to see during the Virginia Tech defensive tackle’s turn in front of the assembled media at the ACC Kickoff. The black kukui nut lei he wore around his neck is a symbol of protection and peace in Hawaii, a meaningful cultural item that was the first thing he packed for the trip to the Queen City.

Football is huge in Hawaii and American Samoa, and in mainland communities of folks representing that heritage. Many PAC-12 schools have multiple Polynesian players on their rosters. Might not be a bad idea to send Josh, Brent, and both line coaches on a junket to Hawaii and Samoa…….

great article! (as usual) TSL.
showing the UT PROSIM demeanor comes from all cultures of the world,
and Mr. JF is a fine person as well as a Hokie player. uphold the lunchpail;
and lead the three-headed monster up front to lots of TFL's, sacks, big
key-shaking stands, and, along with the rest of the D, relentless wins.
Go Hokies!

Andy, great article. Thanks. I so appreciate what you and all the others at TSL give us. I'm sure I speak for all the other readers when I say we are hungry to learn about the team in all aspects but getting inside and getting to know the players is just great. Fuga is an exemplary young man. After this article I feel like upping our win # for this year.

Lived in Hawaii for 4 years while working in Kunia. Andy, your story was fun to read and loved the Hawaii connection that Josh has. He is the kind of student athlete you want representing your team and your university!
