Ahead of Year 2, Brent Pry feels like the Hokies have made progressive strides after a disappointing first season. (Will Stewart)
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Having officially handed off play-calling duties at the end of 2022, Hokies head coach Brent Pry doesn’t spend as much time as he used to in the defensive meeting room, though he admits to getting a little shaky anytime he walks by, his coordinator roots giving him a strong urge to just pop in and instruct.

Every part of the offense needs to be much better this season: personnel, scheme, play calling, execution, adjustments, time-of-possession, red zone, points, results - all of it. Anything that resembles last season is going to get some people fired. Like always, special teams and defense can help with the results but the competency of the offense has to look like a P-5 team.

"Can coordinator Tyler Bowen fashion an offense that doesn’t make Tech fans pine for the Bryan Stinespring era?"
I winced, and then chuckled.

The Stiney offense was every bit as putrid as the 2022 O, but Stiney had better athletes, which partially covered up his terrible scheming and play calling.
ad nauseam
i will never pine for the stiney offense.

I don't know . . . 10 win seasons and a bowl game every year looks pretty good to me right now . . .
HokieCrazy1994
It sounds like you're pining for our defense from those years, not the offense.

When Stiney had major talent around his offenses were good. When all that talent was gone - ooof......

Good write up but I'd like to see a story or two about special teams, good or bad! CFB built his program, even when talent wasn't very high, with special teams. Our offense can be improved and our defense can be good; but, if our special teams are not significantly improved our record will reflect it.

If this season is like last season offensively, I'll pine for the Stiney offense.

I agree!

Andy, thanks so much for another extremely professional and informative article. I do have to add that I was appalled by Coach Pry's statement that "We had more talent at Vanderbilt when we took over than when we took over here. There was more talent on that roster." Amazingly sad how far the VT football program had been allowed to fall under the previous regime when a school like Vanderbilt had more talent. Totally pathetic and hopefully better days are ahead for VT on the gridiron!

Yet the laat regime was able to go .500 with sub Vanderbilt talent. I would love to know what the right abd wrong was is still....I guess TCU is wrong for turning their record from worse than VT's the year before and using the portal to be good. These other teams are doing it wrong by winning and using the portal to turn it around. We have portaled our entire skill positions on offense and all have NIL deals..but we are doing it right compared to others that are wrong?? hmmm. I don't think anyone is doing it wrong..unless you bring in guys abd have a worthless offense. Hopefully Tuten and the all new wr corps make the offense better.

We should all keep our chins up. Better times ahead.

Looking quickly at the 2010 and 2011 Vanderbilt team, the commodores had thousand yard rushers and receivers. Right now the Hokies lack playmakers at RB and Wr. It’ll be interesting to see if somebody on the roster is ready for a breakout year

Remember everyone that was on the .500 team made mass exits. Additionally, Vanderbilt has SEC talent big strong and fast. However we lost 4 games by 11 points and we were leading. I understand you think last year they had talent but not in the right areas.
