Thanks, Andy! I appreciate the more realistic viewpoint on the first month of the season, helps to avoid getting our expectations too high.

Andy, new to Tech sideline since you joined. How do you submit questions to the mailbag?

I've been posting a thread on the TSL Pass Subscribers Only board, though occasionally I open it up to Twitter too. You can always email me at [email protected] too.

Joined TSL for Andy but I also feel like Chris Coleman and him are a good combination. Great article Andy. I do think he’s right will be lucky to be two and two and those opening games. I hope I’m wrong, but I think Andy’s being realistic go, Hokies.

I agree! I would actually be very pleased with a 2-2 start. I think the ODU game is the only game Tech will be a solid favorite and the only game I would be genuinely disappointed if we lose. Even a 1-3 start still allows an improvement over last season depending on the last 8 games.

It would be cool during the offseason to do a series of "where are they now" for our former players. Danny Coale caught the ball.

No doubt about it - Danny Coale had the game winner catch.

Pry probably has an easier time getting Tech to a level of being a top 25-30 program than Beamer did but would have a lot tougher time getting us to a final four or even final eight playoff status. Not to take away from what Frank did in 1999 and a few other years but in 1999 we were relatively injury free, many of the blue bloods were starting to trend a little bit down (Nebraska was good but not the same as Tom Osborne good, Penn State lost as game or two they previously would not have lost, Alabama was down, Oklahoma was a year away from making a comeback, USC was down) so a bit of good timing if not luck benefited us that year. Now Ohio State, Michigan, several SE conference teams, Clemson, Penn State are all good, and USC is starting to ascend all making our path extremely difficult at best, not to mention that large money and the NIL put us at a major disadvantage. I don't see how Pry can get us to that top 10 status anytime in the foreseeable future.

I think VT being a playoff contender shouldn't be the expectation right now. I think we should be consistently above .500 first. But it is possible for non-blue bloods to become contenders, TCU and Cincinnati have both made the playoffs. In addition, FSU and Washington are seemingly coming back. College football is weird, any team can be successful if they have a good coach and whatnot.

I don’t think 2 and 2 is going to cut it - VT had better win the home games and at least split the road events if there is any hope that 2023 is going to be better than 2022. If everything is getting better in all aspects, it should be obvious early in the season.

The thing about our defensive "stars" in particular is that as the overall talent increases, the individual talents can explode. I'm hoping for that.

Andy Andy Andy, 2 wins and 2 loses in the first 4. Whereas I take the fan approach every year and think 3 or 4 wins, AND you just know Tuten will be a Heisman candidate, you always temper my enthusiasm. And dadgummit, you're usually right. I'll forget about all this until your next article and go back to thinking we can run the table. Go Hokies!!

Thanks for speaking into the transfer "who" thing. It's become a odd joke at the expense of 18-22 year olds who are being told to look elsewhere.

But does Virginia produce enough football talent for that to work? It seems the state of Virginia produces a lot less talent relative to the rest of the country than it did back when Beamer was building the program.

does Virginia produce enough football talent for that to work?>>>> VT doesn't have to get all 85 of its players from the state of Virginia. IF VT starts getting a majority of the top ten - it will translate into getting top players from Maryland, NC, etc. Talent seeks its own level. Plus - state boundaries don't mean much anymore.

Great writing! If you decide to take on Chris in wrestling, do it right when he gets back from his vacation. I doubt he has been working out while partying over in GB.
