college students have less ‘baggage’ to worry about than a coach, so you have to expect more movement. Fewer players are married or have children or spouses with second jobs to negotiate in a move. Athletic housing can be simpler and moving costs less. So there’s no way to expect similar rules to result in similar mobility. That does not mean observed patterns are best. Just a note about confounding factors in a comparison.

In terms of # 3, I was bummed to see KJ Florence leave for GA. He was a high energy, high work ethic guy with serious passion and knowledge. He has a very impressive resume, with time spent at major football powers in Ole Miss and GA. These are programs that have shown an ability to consistently develop men in the weight room who are physically capable when they get to the field. Hopefully our guys as a whole have turned the corner and are consistently committing to the work/effort that is required at this level. I liked the idea of us having someone who knows what is required in the weight room at the highest level of college football (SEC) to be successful. I think we still have a ways to go here to get the majority on board.

Is there any behind-the-scenes information on why Buchannon was red-shirted this year that has now led to his entry into the transfer portal? It seems like redshirting is almost a thing of the past in the new portal age. Was he a miss as POY for DC?

Only time will tell. We never knew him at VT.

Regarding the next VT MBB assistant coach hire, I agree with CC that it’s more of a Frazier replacement due to the lack of defense per the noted numbers in CC’s article. I know nothing about the rumored next AMBBC named JD Byers from VCU and Radford. What concerns me is that his wife is the VT WVBC and if she for some reason leaves VT at some point what might he do or visa versa. I hope she really does well at VT and for the VT WVB program and if he’s hired I hope he also does well for the VT MBB program and he becomes a very important piece of bringing the VT MBB program to a very high level.

Agree with your assessment, but let's assume (ASS-U-ME) a few things, because that's what we message board trolls like to do... Byers is a capable coach based on his resume. He wants to be in Blacksburg with his family. Emphasizing the THIS IS HOME. He has connections to Richmond and other area HS coaches, leaving Webster to recruit the DMV. Young had a conversation with Whit, so his wife must be well-liked at VT. No issue there. He's not the HAVOC defensive coordinator at VCU, but CMY must think he can bring some of that theory (or something like it) to Tech.

That’s all possible. I haven’t seen any official announcement as of yet.

CC. There has been a new waiver requirement from the NCAA that Jon Rothstein posted on his Twitter page.
