SG got screwed by NCAA 2-3 times IIRC, maybe his own doing. I any case he was a pretty good coach, about his personality, I know nothing.

The Curry debacle is what sticks out in my mind the most about Greenberg. Hard to watch him on ESPN because of it.

There’s a story I’ll share that will always shine a positive light on Greenberg in my eyes (although not above Coach Young). Back in the Greenberg days, my 16 year old son (now a senior in the Corps) and I went to a b-ball game at NC State. We had tickets mid court a few rows back (opposite the teams). Needless to say there weren’t many Hokies around us. After the game Greenberg walked across the court and motioned us closer and thanked us for coming. I’ll always think that was very classy. There’s a personality that I sometimes see in leadership that is hardcore, perfectionist, but controlling. It can lead to incredible success or flaming failure. Some people are inspired by it and some repulsed. I put Greenberg (and Buzz) both in that camp.

The problem with the acc is all the private schools other than Miami have little value as football programs. Football drives league revenue. For the most part all the state schools such as VT subsidize the programs of Wake, Duke, BC and Syracuse. A new league without them generates more revenue for the remaining twelve. What we need to do is what the metro did to us. It’s the only path to remain financially competitive. No one has the nuts to execute the obvious. Contraction, not expansion is the answer

I met Seth twice after games at the Peterson Events Center after Pitt/VT games. He was nothing but gracious that we attended and supported the program. I have no ill will towards him.

When Seth was hired it was mentioned that he tended to rub people the wrong way and wear out his Welcome. That seems to be what happened here.

I don't get the hate for Seth. I understand why he was let go but I have no hard feelings. He and his teams had to bear the brunt of our entry to the Good 'Ol Boys Club called the ACC. I do have a little grudge for Buzz, based on his mercenary, "me first" nature. But I give him credit for what he accomplished.

A lot of Seth’s criticism is based on how he treated people especially others in the athletic program. You can be a genius on the court but if you are a jackass off of it you’ll leave quite a wake. Seth unfortunately is remembered by many for things other than what he accomplished on the court.

I still like Seth. He's what we needed at the time.

Agreed on the conf expansion. The only financially favorable expansion path that I could see would be a long-shot scenario where the SEC or BIG 10 to take enough schools from another conference to cause that conference to disintegrate and then they take most of the the TV revenue that the former conference had. For example, take 5 teams from the ACC and somehow garner 60% of their $500 million in TV money. Remote, at best.

I always wondered what would have happened if Greenberg was able to stay an extra two years rather than James Johnson coming in. His 2011 class was the best in VT basketball history numbers-wise with a five star and two four stars and a composite ranking of 11 per 247. Then the next class had Montrezl Harrell committed who was another 4 star and is currently in the NBA. He basically had two waves of teams in my eyes. The first one with Dowdell, Gordon, Collins, Sailes, Washington, and Vassallo, the second one with Delaney, Allen, Bell, Davila, Green, and Hudson. First wave was good. They meshed well with each other and Greenberg it seemed. The second wave did not. A third wave with Finney-Smith, Harrell, Barksdale, Brown, Eddie and Wood (can’t remember if Wood committed to Greenberg or Johnson) could have been fun. Ultimately, everything worked out given everything Buzz Williams and Mike Young have been able to accomplish in less than a decade. I would have much rather seen Greenberg leading those 2012 and 2013 teams with NBA talent like Finney-Smith, Harrell, and Eddie, though.

With regard to CMY, you didn't even mention our ACC Tournament Championship last year! He is a long way from Greenberg.

THX for fielding that last ?. Nobody should conflate MY and SG on almost anything.

Not to worry-the author wasn't going to miss out on the opportunity.

Often the way you treat people is remembered move vividly than the wins and scores.

Not for me due to the way he messed up the Curry recruitment.
