Virginia Tech held a NFL Draft-themed Signing Day ceremony. (Virginia Tech athletics photography)
Another Signing Day is in the books for Virginia Tech. Fortunately, there was very little drama. All of the players who previously committed to the Hokies stuck by their commitment and signed on the dotted line, and Tech even added a last-minute safety in Mose Phillips from Tennessee.

I live in the Collins Hill High district where Travis Hunter was the #1 player in the country last year who chose to play for Deion Sanders at Jackson State and I am just 10minutes from the Buford Highschool district. These schools always dominate the talk around here so I watched Wittke some this year but not enough to have a clear opinion but many of my coworkers have student athletes and cheerleaders at Buford and they werent very complimentary about Wittke. I hope he is a hard worker at the college level and proves to be the surprise of the class. In Highschool, He didnt have to do or show much when you have Justice Haynes the #2 Running Back in the country in the backfield. You do the smart thing and hand it off.

Interesting - I thought I remembered a few years ago an article about how bad the recruits were from the Richmond area with regards to actually being productive. Am I misremembering or has something changed?
Repugnance4wvu
Yeah I was thinking the same thing when I read this. I thought there were a lot of quality players from Richmond that never made it to the field. I think there was a high percentage of players with off field issues if so remember correctly.

Thanks for a fine article. I’m not that worried about DT because of the RS talent coming up. Although I’d love to get a solid starter out of the portal. What I am concerned about is RB. King and Thomas seem like the top 2, and they both are talented but can’t seem to play one whole game. Not durable at all so far. And I’m not seeing a potential star-in-the-making in this years class or RS group. I think the #1 portal target right now should be RB. ODU’s Watson would be a fine addition IMO. There’s a kid from Shane’s outfit that looks like a good one also.

Pick your poison, but nice to have high school QBs with lots of experience, some things just need to be 2nd nature by the time you hit college so the player is more into refining his game rather than having to learn it in the first place eg "projects."
Interesting about digging into Hokie Huddlers for research. It's amazing how something that is common knowledge gets lost after a few years, you may be the last ditch effort to keep it together.

Chris …. Not in this article but one previous (I believe) and certainly in yesterday’s podcast, you eluded to how if you were Mines, you’d essentially have one foot out the door because of being a UVA grad coaching at VT and having to live with snide UVA comments in and around the athletic office. Please apologize. Do you have any evidence of that occurring? I think we can all appreciate the work done thus far by Coach Mines. I don’t care where they’ve played or coached (even UNCheat), if they are doing there job in an effective and professional way, we should do all we can to encourage them to be a part of the Tech family.

UVA football truly is the gift that keeps on giving for Virginia Tech.
That it is, Chris. That it is.
Hopefully, our $hitter was as full as it is ever going to get this past year.

Chris - why is it so hard to get any 40 times on recruits? Ditto for their other stats - like weight room? Ditto on both for the VT players?
Chris Coleman
The NCAA doesn't let schools report on their players 40 times, weight room numbers, etc. Back when schools did that (AKA BeamerBall.com) a lot of players became heavily criticized, so the NCAA put a stop to it by not letting schools report it.
As far as recruits go, there's no real point on reporting on stuff like that. There's no way that the numbers can be verified, and there's no way that the numbers could be consistently recorded across all parts of the country. You might have one timer at one camp with a quicker stop watch than others, if you know what I'm saying. There's just no way to regulate it. If those numbers were out there, most wouldn't be accurate, and people would be misled. That's pretty much what happened when 40 times were listed on Rivals back in the day. Amazing that so many WR recruits ran a 4.4 in high school, then a 4.6 in college, and then a 4.7 at the combine, haha.

Thanks for the explanation. Yeah - I was surprised at all of the info that could be found on BeamerBall.com
BTW - it's hard to believe that the NCAA might have been right about something. :-)

THE OPENING INVITATIONAL has the most complete set of athletic ratings for offensive players and defensive backs and DE's.
They measure, weigh, and time 3 events and measure the power ball throw, plus observe one on one performance in passing drills (7 on 7). Our backup fr. running back Bryce Duke attended two years and did well.

Thanks, Tally. It seems that they're in the business of 'selling' their info to recruiting services - including colleges. Most of the critical info isn't available to the regular public.
On the very positive side - it's a great place for the players to learn how to train - and perform drills to the max. Which in turn helps their performance on the field.

How many DTs do we need? We have 3-4 that are redshirting this year.

Not much talent south of the James River in Chesterfield County?
EvDogHokie
2 guys from Manchester are VA top 15 in 247 list for 2024 recruits
00hokie69
Lots of talent in Chesterfield County albeit not consistently i.e. Bird, Manchester, and recently Midlothian. Not sure the high school coaches promote the players as much as they could.
