Inside The Numbers: An Uptick In Play For Dax Hollifield

I don’t want to jinx him, but Dax Hollifield is quietly putting together an excellent season for Virginia Tech. I say quietly because when the team is losing, we (myself included) have a tendency to focus on the things that aren’t going quite so well while ignoring the good individual performances. Therefore, today I want to reverse that trend and talk about what a good season Hollifield is having for the Hokies.

Remember, Dax was asked to play out of his natural position for several years and everyone knew it, including his coaches.

Dumb question but who decides how to rank the players each week? Is it all from the coaching staff or is there some hard and fast metric that is purely based on tackles made, passes defensed etc?

Nah, the coaching staff doesn't do it. They do their own grading system. For example, some VT coaches used to go over their grades every Sunday on BeamerBall.com. Each coaching staff would have their own unique grading style. PFF is no different. I don't know exactly how they grade, but for VT, generally speaking their grades match up with what I see with my own eyes. Grades generally don't have anything to do with individual stats, particularly on defense. If you secure your gap on a running play, you get a positive grade for that play, whether you make the tackle or not.

So move our WR to the OL? Problem solved!

This ought to prove that he is a damned good player. It also ought to say something about this staff.

Or it proves he has started for 5 years. You better be pretty good when you have that much experience. This staff may have given up 31 more points to UNC than almost the exact same defense last yr (except one ye more experienced this yr), but they can improve Dax. LBs should be fine moving forward, about the only coach I have confidence in is Marve, and Pry knows about LBs as well. Too bad coaching everywhere else has players massively regressing.

Holston has been in the system for at least as long. You could say the same about him. I’m not sure if that proves or refutes your point though.

If he had just a bit more speed he might be an NFL guy…
