For a while there, I was thinking of this hire being like buying a lottery ticket, where you don’t have a clue what you’re getting until you scratch the silver or catch the numbers in the evening. But that’s not fair to Smith or the coaching staff who offered him. Smith has a resume we can all see, while the coaches have interviewed him and talked with his past coaches. On the other hand, he’s not in the media, his most prominent job was an FCS school (albeit, a great one), and we didn’t watch him in college for years. Maybe the hire is more like a poker hand that seems decent at first glance; how it looks now and what it looks like in the context of the evolving game can be completely different things, but you at least have some odds to help you play.
