A junior at the time, Sam Denmark, a speedy wide receiver prospect from South Carolina, verbally committed to Virginia Tech several weeks after National Signing Day for the 2015 Class. Whether history will repeat itself remains to be seen, but Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) junior wideout Austin Connor was in Blacksburg this past weekend for Virginia Tech's Junior Day recruiting event.

Connor sees Tech as a good fit academically and athletically.

"I want to be an engineer, and VT has one of the best engineering programs in the nation and they are nationally recognized team in football also," Connor wrote in an interview over Twitter. "So I could have the best of both worlds, so to speak."

The 6'0", 180-pound prospect spoke highly of new head coach Justin Fuente and the rest of Virginia Tech's offensive staff.

"Their mentality and way of doing things fit me and will benefit me in bettering myself as an athlete and a young man," Connor said. "They pretty much explained to me what they had in mind for the upcoming years and how they planned on building the program."

Virginia Tech offered Connor a scholarship last month, becoming the first major FBS program to do so. Dartmouth has also offered, and Duke and Miami are among the schools showing serious interest. This past season, Connor had 30 receptions for 804 yards -- an average of 26.8 yards per catch -- and five touchdowns.

"I'm a speedster," Connor wrote, describing his game. "I'm a consistent 4.3 guy so I love playing fast! I also had a vertical of 38" in 10th grade which is possibly 40" or higher now so I also love jump balls, deep balls, screens and slants."

Connor attended a Junior Day event at Miami in late January and plans on visiting Duke "in a few weeks." In what is a good sign for the Hokies, the Dutch Fork star plans on returning to Virginia Tech to see "a few spring practices to get to know the team and everyone even better."

Where does Virginia Tech stand on Connor's list? And when might a decision come?

"I have a few top schools and VT is in my top 3," Connor answered. "I have no clue for sure when I'm going to commit because that's a big decision that I'll have to talk over with my family."
