"The Opening: D.C." (former the Nike Football Training Camp) was held at Centreville High School (Clifton, VA) on Sunday, April 19. I'll have individual reports in the coming week, but for now here are some news and notes from today's event.

Top Performers

Seven high school juniors received invites to the main "Opening" event that takes place in Eugene, Oregon:

- Darryl Turner, WR, DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD), MARYLAND COMMIT

- Keandre Jones, LB, Good Counsel (Olney, MD), MARYLAND COMMIT
- Jaquan Yulee, LB, Indian River (Chesapeake, VA), Uncommitted
- Levonta Taylor, CB, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA), FLORIDA STATE COMMIT

The seven invitees are below. Going left to right, there is Diggs, Haskins, Taylor, Davis, Turner, Jones, Yulee.

Virginia Tech has offered at least three of the four uncommitted prospects, with Davis as the only question mark. Taylor, who is likely the top prospect in the state of Virginia's class of 2016, turned in the top SPARQ rating of the year after running a 4.03-second shuttle, posting a 42.2-inch vertical leap, and running a 4.34-second electronically-timed 40.

Haskins (QB), Abdul Adams (RB, H.D. Woodson H.S. in Washington, D.C.), Turner, Davis, Drew Birchmeier (DL, Cosby H.S. in Midlothian, VA), Aaron Hansford (LB, St. John's College H.S. in Washington, D.C.) and Daman Hayes (DB, Wise H.S. in MD) scored MVP honors at their respective positions.

Following the 1-on-1s and Half Skelly (basically, 3-on-3), "Opening" organizers picked the top camp performers to compete in the Super Showcase 7-on-7. In addition to the players mentioned above, Virginia Tech class of 2016 targets Tino Ellis (WR), Grant Holloway (WR), Jalen Elliott (DB) and Wayne Davis (DB) made the Super 7.

VT Recruiting Notes: Big-Time Recruits Set To Attend Spring Game

- Haskins and Yulee are two of the most highly recruited prospects at their respective positions in the class of 2016. Both players said they plan to be at Virginia Tech's Spring Game next Saturday.

Haskins, who has visited Tech before, jokingly said that Scot Loeffler has been "begging" him to make a return trip. He plans to do so on April 25 and added that his mother will accompany him (she didn't make the first visit).

Wayne Davis, Grant Holloway, class of 2017 wide receiver target Tahj Capehart of Ocean Lakes, 4-star junior offensive lineman Richard Merritt, Bayside (Va. Beach, VA) junior wide receiver/defensive back Phillip Patterson and Hokies class of 2016 cornerback commitment Myles Wolfolk all told me today that they will attend Tech's Spring Game as well.

If this is any indication, Virginia Tech will be playing host to a lot of talent next Saturday.

- Haskins indicated on Sunday that he and Trevon Diggs are likely to pick the same school. Haskins is eyeing a late May or June commitment, while Diggs, brother of former University of Maryland receiver Stefon Diggs, is likely to wait longer.

Diggs has revealed the top 12 schools on his list. Via Twitter, he listed: Alabama, LSU, Florida, Tennessee, Penn State, Miami, Clemson, Auburn, North Carolina, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, Maryland.

I'm not sure if this is in any particular order.

- Holloway, a 6'2" junior wide receiver out of Grassfield High School (Chesapeake, VA), has Virginia Tech as one of his top three schools but indicated he is getting more and more open with each new offer. With his size and speed combination (he ran an electronically-timed sub-4.4 40), it wouldn't surprise at all to see his offer list continue to grow. Wherever he does attend college, Holloway says he plans to play football and run track.

Holloway seems very impressed with assistant Bryan Stinespring, who is his primary recruiter for the Hokies.

- As reported here on Friday, LC Bird (Chesterfield, VA) junior athlete Jalen Elliott plans to attend Tech's Spring Game next Saturday as well. He performed only at defensive back at today's event... I felt he answered the challenge. Elliott is a really good athlete with good speed, and as a safety he covers a lot of ground. After watching him today, I think cornerback is a real option on the next level. Elliott has excellent quickness, is a fluid athlete, and looked quick out of his breaks.

- Wolfolk sounds rock solid in his commitment to Virginia Tech. DBs coach Torrian Gray, who visited Wise High School (Upper Marlboro, MD) earlier this week, has developed a close relationship with the promising defensive back prospect. Wolfolk noted how Gray always asks how he and his family are doing, which he appreciates because family is very important to him. Wolfolk also likes how Gray puts defensive backs into the NFL.

The Wise standout had a solid day on Sunday. He showed good anticipation and a physical style of play from the corner spot. Given his physicality, I think Wolfolk could play several DB positions for Virginia Tech.

- Tech commits Kareem Felder and Reggie Floyd were supposed to attend as well, but neither was there.
