The “TSL Pass Recruiting Report” will be a bi-weekly feature catching you up with the latest news and numbers on Virginia Tech football’s class of 2016.

KEY DATES

- Spring practice begins next week. Look for recruits to make their way to Blacksburg to catch the Hokies in action.

- Virginia Tech's Spring Game is Saturday, April 25. Always a big recruiting draw/tool for the Hokies.

- National Signing Day for the class of 2016 will be Wednesday, February 3. The possibility remains that there will be an Early Signing Period implemented in December. That will be voted on this summer.

THE CLASS OF 2016

Commitments

With quarterback Logan Byrd’s decommitment, Virginia Tech now has seven commitments in the class of 2016. Each one is a skill position player, including three cornerbacks, two wide receivers, one quarterback/defensive back and one safety/running back.

(Note: WR Conner O’Donnell is listed as a commitment on 247Sports but is not listed as a commitment on Rivals. For the purposes of this article I will include him as a commitment, but his status is something to keep in mind.)

- Myles Wolfolk, CB, Wise (Upper Marlboro, MD)

Scholarship Spots and Offers

This class does not project to be a full 25-player class for the Hokies. At this point, the staff may only have room for 8-12 more commitments. We should get a better idea of the numbers in the spring and summer months, when we find out how much attrition takes place, but at this point this is not expected to be a full class.

Going by those rising senior prospects both 247Sports and Rivals list (as well as those we have confirmed) as having a Virginia Tech offer, 124 scholarship offers have been extended. The majority of the offers extended -- over 20-percent -- are to offensive line prospects with wide receiver running second. Tech took four offensive line prospects in last year's class, five if you count 2014 Class holdover Tyrell Smith. Obviously the staff is looking to continue to address the offensive line in this year's class as well. And as Chris Coleman addressed in late February, the staff is looking to address receiver in a significant way.

Location-wise, Virginia Tech is focused most heavily on in-state prospects. Below is the breakdown by state of the scholarship offers Frank Beamer and company have extended in the class of 2016.

DEVELOPMENTS WITHIN THE PAST FEW WEEKS

Here are some of the recent news/notes related to class of 2016 football recruiting you may have missed within the past few weeks.

- Not an official update, but we hear that Tech is in good position with North Carolina standout junior offensive lineman Landon Dickerson. The 6'5", 290-pound junior has visited Blacksburg several times and was last at Tech for a Junior Day on February 7. The competition is tough -- Clemson, Florida State and Tennessee are among the schools that offered previously -- and is getting tougher, with Auburn coming through with a firm offer and Alabama reportedly offering as well (though we're not certain that is a firm offer at this point).

- On March 5, Virginia Tech released the news that five players had been granted medical hardship waivers from this past season. Defensive tackle Luther Maddy's return does not impact class of 2016 recruiting, as he will be a senior this coming season. Safety Desmond Frye would have been a senior this coming season had he not gotten the waiver, but now he will be a junior in 2015 and presumably will be back in 2016 as well. This takes up a scholarship at safety.

Tight end Kalvin Cline, cornerback Brandon Facyson and offensive lineman Braxton Pfaff were projected to be on the 2016 season roster regardless of if they received the hardship.

- New Jersey standout wide receiver Ahmir Mitchell revealed his top six (in order) via Twitter on March 6. The list is as follows: Rutgers, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Ole Miss, Michigan. Mitchell has only visited Rutgers, but that will change soon as he plans to visit Notre Dame this coming Saturday. He also revealed on March 12 that he plans to visit Virginia Tech on April 11.

- St. John's College (Washington, D.C.) class of 2016 athlete Aaron Hansford reported via Twitter on March 6 that Virginia Tech had offered him a scholarship. Duke, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin have also offered the 6'0", 200-pound junior, who has some impressive highlights as a wide receiver and linebacker.

St. John's plays in the talented WCAC, which also features Good Counsel and DeMatha, among other schools. St. John's finished with a 6-4 record last season, including overtime losses to DeMatha and Good Counsel. The Hokies have offered another St. John's junior in tight end Devante Brooks, but Brooks has committed to Tennessee.

- As mentioned, Logan Byrd is no longer a Hokie. Don't expect him to come back into the fold. Virginia Tech has double-digit offers out to quarterbacks in the class of 2016. Current commit JoVonn Quillen Jr. will get a look at quarterback, but defensive back is also a very real possibility for him. With that in mind, I expect the staff to try and land a sure-fire signal caller to go along with Quillen.
