Whitehead Makes Another Trip To Blacksburg

Since verbally committing to Virginia Tech on May 3 of this year, class of 2015 defensive tackle Eric Whitehead has visited Blacksburg three times. His most recent experience came this past weekend, when he traveled to Virginia Tech alongside former high school teammate and Hokies class of 2015 cornerback target Adonis Williamson.

Whitehead and Williamson arrived in Blacksburg Friday night and stayed through Monday. Both recruits had an opportunity to explore the freshman dorms, have meetings with coaches, and watch the team workout.

“Every time I go I’m never disappointed,” Whitehead said of his latest experience at Tech. “It shows why I picked to go here. Every time I go there I meet an underclassman I hadn’t met before. They tell me what it’s like.”

Has there been a common theme from the feedback he has received from current Tech student athletes?

“Everyone says how Blacksburg makes them feel like family, more than just a team,” Whitehead said. “That has me pretty hyped about it.”

Virginia Tech was the first major FBS program to offer the 6’2”, 300-pound rising senior, who played at Arsenal Tech High (Indianapolis, IN) last season but has transferred to Lawrence Central High (Indianapolis, IN). Head coach Frank Beamer, defensive coordinator Bud Foster and defensive line coach Charley Wiles made Whitehead a priority early on in the process.

“They always tell me I remind them of Luther Maddy. I’m going to play his role. He’s a good pass rusher and a good run stopper,” Whitehead said.

Asked what he feels separates him from other defensive tackle recruits, Whitehead, who plans to sign with Tech in February and enroll next summer, said: “I think I get off the ball faster than a lot of other players.”

Catching Up With Williamson

Whitehead describes Williamson, who attends Arsenal Tech, as a player “who doesn’t talk much, but he backs it up on the field.”

The 6’1”, 180-pound prospect kept it simple when describing his time in Blacksburg this past weekend. The experience was his first at Virginia Tech.

“I love Virginia. It felt like home,” Williamson wrote in a direct message on Twitter.

Missouri, Northern Illinois and Virginia Tech are the top three schools for Williamson, who claims all three are even and does not yet have a decision date.

Arnold Visiting

Per Twitter, Winter Haven (FL) rising senior offensive lineman Mike Arnold is in Blacksburg today on an unofficial visit. Virginia Tech has been considered one of the favorites for the 6'5", 290-pound prospect, who is also considering offers from Miami, Nebraska and others.

As Chris Coleman discussed in this well-received piece, 5-star Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) defensive end Josh Sweat visited Tech this past weekend. Sweat is one of the top overall recruits in the nation in the class of 2015.

August 1 Announcements

Thursday night at 6 pm (on the six o'clock news, so the decision may not come until around 6:20), Dan River (Ringold, VA) standout Tremaine Edmunds will announce his commitment live on WSLS Roanoke. The 6’4”, 225-pound Edmunds, one of the top overall recruits in the state in this class, will choose Maryland, Southern Cal, Virginia Tech or Wake Forest.

Edmunds told TSL last week that Virginia Tech is recruiting him as a Backer. With his size and versatility, the Dan River rising senior also has potential as a tight end or defensive end in college in my opinion.

A pair of rising senior targets are ready to announce their college decisions this week. Atlantic Coast (Jacksonville, FL) tight end/defensive end Chris Cunningham is expected to choose between Louisville and Virginia Tech, schools he visited this past week, on Friday at 6 pm. 247Sports has Louisville as the favorite.

Cunningham, who stands 6’3” and weighs 235 pounds, is a 3-star recruit.
