Virginia Tech has been high on Lafonte Thorougood's list throughout. In a TSL Pass article in October of 2009, the 6-2, 215-pound quarterback said, "Virginia Tech is definitely in my top five," but he didn't want to commit early in order to explore his options. Thourogood made unofficial visits to Notre Dame, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. He took official visits to Tech and WVU. He was considering official visits to Arkansas, Florida, and possibly Michigan until this past Saturday.

"He went up to the game, had a good time, and decided that committing to Virginia Tech was the best thing all around," said Ocean Lakes head coach Chris Scott, who guided the Dolphins to an 8-3 record in 2010. "I think it was a feeling he had for a while, but he wanted to make sure he looked at all options. He just felt there was no more need to look around. He felt it was time to make a decision, so he could start preparing for next year."
