Warren Central (Indianapolis, IN) senior defensive tackle Kris Harley does not plan to enroll early at Virginia Tech, meaning he will be able to defend the state title he won in the shotput last spring. The 6-2, 265-pound senior will not have the benefit of spring practice, but by the time preseason practice rolls around next year he hopes to be in serious competition for playing time.
"His goal is to come in and play as a true freshman," Warren Central defensive coordinator Steve Tutsie said of Harley, a 4-star recruit who committed to Tech back in the spring. "Us using Virginia Tech's system puts him ahead of other defensive linemen. The big thing will be physically. He will train like he is going to a combine. That's how you have to train if you want to meet the physical demands of college football as a freshman. We had a long talk and he said he doesn't want to red-shirt. Savvy-wise, he is ready. Physically, he'll have to be ready."
