The Virginia Tech football program took a convincing step forward last week
against a solid Ohio program. Bud Foster's suffocating defense returned to form,
completely shutting down the Bobcat offense in the second half. The defense tied
a VT record, only allowing five first downs, and did not allow a single first
down in the second half. Tyrod Taylor had a solid performance in his first
starting assignment, generating considerable excitement as the Hokie offense
showed more balance. The running game looked much better, but improvement is
still needed to threaten the better ACC teams. So, what should we expect from
this week's game with William & Mary?
The Tribe are well coached with Jimmye Laycock entering his 28th year as head
coach of William & Mary. The Tribe always have an explosive offense, and
this year is certainly no exception. Currently, the Tribe lead the D-1 FCS level
(formerly 1-AA) in scoring and passing offense after three games behind
quarterback Jake Phillips (#11, 6-3 219, Jr.). Phillips, originally from Bath
County, currently leads the nation in pass efficiency rating, and William &
Mary's ability to throw the ball will present a challenge for the Virginia Tech
defense.
