The discussion on the message boards about the offense reminds me of a
similar discussion from the 2002 season. Back then, the Hokies had a great
running game, led by Kevin Jones and Lee Suggs, and a brand new starting
quarterback in true sophomore Bryan Randall. The Hokies leaned on their
strengths that season and brought Randall along slowly, just like they're doing
with Glennon this year.
In 2002, the Hokies returned three starters on the offensive line and six
total linemen that the media guide said saw "significant action." That
wasn't a great line, but it was solid and had experience. Throw in sophomore
tailback Kevin Jones and redshirt senior tailback Lee Suggs, and it was obvious
that the strength of the team was the running game. QB Bryan Randall was
inexperienced and star receiver Andre Davis had left for the NFL, so the passing
game was perceived as a weakness.
