Wrestling as a sport

I have watched zero NCAA basketball games this year but watched every session of the NCAA wrestling tournament. Why? It is compelling, it is additive and anything can happen (thank you Matt Ramos and Fast Eddie V). I officiate high school wrestling and have also officiated USA Wrestling events. Wrestling is not only a sport but a community. I admit that I may not be a great wrestling official (compared to other sports) but it is my favorite sport due to the sense of community from the wrestlers, coaches, fellow officials and fans. It just always feels right. One of my favorite wrestling stories involves my time in the Army. When I went to Ft. Benning for Infantry school, we did hand to hand training and as our "Test" of what we learned, they put 120 of us in a circle in a saw dust pit. They said that you could either "tap out, thrown out, or get knocked out" but the last man standing would get a day pass. So we all fought in this pit and when we got to 10, the drill sergeants stopped us. Out of the 10, 8 of us had been either high school or college (we had 2) wrestlers. When I went to Ranger Battalion, over half my company (120 guys) were former wrestlers. Why could that be? Well, what we learned wasn't rocket science...we were just guys starved, had sleep depravation and pushed to the limits of physical exhaustion during RIP (Ranger Indoctrination Program). We were just the guys who sucked it up and pushed through the pain.
