Some thoughts on Kenny Brooks departure . . .

Upon hearing that KB had decided to leave, I was disappointed and a little sad. He had a great thing going and Hokie Nation was all in! Not only was his program winning at a high level, they were adored by the Hokie faithful due to their collective personality. They were great and fitting ambassadors to the university. Fans were flocking to fill Cassell and even had large followings on the road, pretty much unheard of in this sport. However, after some sober reflection, I have personally decided that its time to MOVE ON! Our program will no doubt have to rebuild and the next couple of seasons will be tough. But KB is not the only good coach in the game and in fact, we may be able to do better. Prior to Kitley's entrance to Blacksburg, KB was pretty much a mediocre, middle of the pack coach. He himself kept telling everyone that Liz was a generational player, a once in a lifetime player, and that we shouldn't take her for granted. He was 100% correct in that statement. Liz dominated games, and who made all of those buzzer beater shots?, None other than Liz! He does deserve major credit for her recruitment and development. However, his recent success was really all about Liz and Georgia. This year's team improved as they learned their role in the Liz and Georgia show, but without Liz, the team was a shell of its self. My point here is that we (and KY) may have some recency bias on just how good KB is as a coach. In terms of his decision to leave, here is my take. Many people have posted that every one of us would take the bigger paycheck in the end. I disagree. Many people turn down "better" jobs all of the time, due to relocation, disruption of life, leaving behind people you love and care for, and not wanting to leave something that you have built. It sounds like Whit offered a very competitive package, but in the end it was not good enough. KY offered a little more money, but in the end there was more to it. We weren't good enough for Kenny. Cassell wasn't good enough for Kenny. Orange and Maroon wasn't good enough for Kenny. Blacksburg wasn't good enough for Kenny. Hokie Nation wasn't good enough for Kenny. He decided the grass was greener in KY, in this case bluegrass. Also, I think many are forgetting the fact that it was Whit that gave him his big shot and provided his program with everything needed to reach the Final 4. His style of play was working in the ACC and he was the darling of the ACC. I'm pretty confident that these things will not move with him to Lexington. He will just be another coach in the SEC, and his personal style and coaching style does not point towards success in the rough and tough, it just means more SEC. One last point, I saw this morning a Tweet from Coach Poppie thanking UTC for everything and stating "Once a Moc, Always a Moc". To this point, crickets from KB with a similar message. It's not that hard, and to me it speaks volumes!
