Sears would have Wenzel, Nelson, Wells, Suffren, and Daley as barriers

to playing time...not too mention Swanson (no matter how much Swanson isn't playing right now). You might underestimate the trust it takes for coaches to play freshmen when they have at least 5 better, nore experenced options. And anything Sears did in the non-conference schedule against creampuffs would be meaningless against Duke, Louisville, NC State, UNC....etc....
