King of Hokies. Maybe the @ will get to you? As part of our conversation about pitching calls, I thought of something that is part of the conversation but different.
Yaeger mentioned in an interview earlier this year that Mazzarone will sometimes change the side of the plate from what the pitch is called, and part of the task between her and Mazzarone is getting to know her mind. Yaeger said the growth as been knowing what she wants to throw and getting to know her mind. She said the same thing (getting to know her mind) in regards to Carrico. It may or may not add anything to our discussion, but I thought it just now as to how there will be times, the pitch that gets thrown may not be the call or at least not the same side.

"throwing a pitch." My point is that I'm not down with blaming the pitch caller because Mazz often misses too far outside the zone when ahead in the count. There is zero chance Josh is calling for her to miss that badly because it doesn't help anyone. The goal is to throw something that looks like a strike when it gets delivered but doesn't hit any part of the plate. And Mazz has yet to master that, which we agree on.

didn’t set up way outside of the plate. That has got to influence the call on a pitch that’s on the edge of the plate. Ump sees her set up outside and is going to be looking automatically at a ball. JMHO
