That is a problem in collegiate softball due to the way the rule is written and applied. My problem is consistency of application in games and to BOTH teams. Hyde was Lonnie Almeda's ***** earlier this season in Tallahassee and Tonya Cash performed the same service for Rachel Lawson this weekend, although in fairness to her she may just have had a mental acuity and eyesight problem today after being unable to avoid getting hit by a foul ball that was hit sharply down the first base line in last night's game. Both umps are experienced and know the rules, the questions around both involve consistency of application and whether the consistency was affected by intentional or unintentional bias. @williamfloyd can certainly give a more informed interpretation of the rule than I can and the rest is just my opinion of those two umpires.
