I was told never be without one in my pocket as baseball ump. Easy look up.
Must be an unspoken rule with sensitive ("rabbit ear") umps.
And to never carry one as a football referee. One reason for the latter is there are a lot of case situations. Could be messy.
Story: Had a friend use a baseball rule in a softball game. Probably didn't have a softball rulebook.
